You’re right. It was a really hard decision. Been wrestling with it a few weeks. Trish and I both drive it, and we’ve had some great trips abroad in this car, not to mention all the events and flat four runs. It’s made us lots of lovely memories.

I was really interested in all your thoughts on
how more pleasure can come from driving slow cars fast. That’s pretty much as I see it, especially today. On the right road the 356 is like a go kart, it has a great feel and rides well, but it’s also punchy (uprated 1720 engine) and of course very light. In a 356, I find that other motorists are rarely trying to race you or cut you up, though they sometimes drive up too close to find out what it really is - and largely they’re fascinated when they see that it really is a Porsche.

On the motorway you see their passengers mouthing the words ‘it’s a Porsche’ as they pass by, craning their necks to see the bonnet script. Then there’s generally a thumbs up, or wave. Sometimes, to surprise them I accelerate fast to briefly catch them up. A 356 with an uprated engine can quickly reach illegal speeds on the motorway, and if you run it on 5 and a half inch wheels it’s very steady. If you like it more ‘slippy’ you run 4 and a halves.

And I get Majordad’s reservations too, but when the tickover putt putt becomes a bassy thrumm at speed in a little car on a twisty and tight B road - it’s pretty addictive.

So why sell you’re thinking? Well like many of you we have several cars, they’re my/our passion, and being curious to try other things, something of value has sadly to go. Creating, using and enjoying this car was really absorbing fun, a foray into early Porsche history and engineering. But if it doesn’t sell, neither of us will be crying!

We have had great experiences and I think this photo by the French photographer Laurent Duchene just about tops the lot. Trish says she was about to overtake the Talbot Lago, but I think given my nonchalant arm out of the window, I must have been pretty relaxed, so most likely he’d just overtaken us.





Bit embarrassing this, but the Williams Crawford ad is not yet up because the enterprising Mr KS, sleuth journo of this parish, actually jumped the gun on posting that it would be up for sale. No worries, as he was very kind about the car…(Thanks Keith).

Ah, forgot you don’t ‘do’ Facebook! Williams Crawford had already posted on their page that your 356 was ‘incoming’ and to watch this space, so it was already in the public domain.
