We are agreed that the right solution is the right solution!

However I disagree about the repair. There was 3 years between the repair and when Jason bought it. Even with only 60 miles the repair could have failed. It could easily have been cut open, the new repair made and made good. The choice is between Alan coming on here and telling a tale or something else happening. I prefer the latter narrative.

Not true Graham. There was no more than one year and 60 miles. The car was in storage at Alan’s until 2020 and then went into storage at GT Classics till I bought it.

I know what you’d like to “believe” Graham but let’s stick to the actual facts that I have so far please…..until someone tells/shows me completely different with proof or until I discover something completely different.

Which would be really nice but I’m not holding my breath.

Let’s not exaggerate dates or what we ‘hope’ is the case. All I have stated up to now is detailed here and none of that is based on guessing or hoping…it’s actual facts and what has happened to me so far…no doubt there will be more twists and turns as I progress with this issue as nothing surprises me anymore….

You are the only person that can gather any facts. We are at least second hand more like third hand. You can decide what happened. It doesn't really matter to us.

You know the possible resolutions. You don't care about how it got here and don't want us to try and analyse possibilities.

Either Alan is telling porkies of something else happened as simple as that.

I simply posted what I found yesterday after cutting the sill open.

It wasn’t what I was expecting so changed possible options.

I’m still looking at ways forward on this and have discussed options with a number of kind people on the phone today based on what I posted yesterday and what maybe to do.

The fact I’ve had to follow up with a load of information on dates and actual facts is because OTHERS kept talking about legals (you mainly Graham) and timescales that were completely inaccurate- I’ve never mentioned either of those - but had to redress them when these inaccuracies have been posted to keep the thread correct.

This is not your thread mate. You don’t need to comment or guess if you don’t want to. Maybe you should leave it there?

And I’ll decide what I post and where thank you. And I’ll decide when I’m finished posting or until the site owner closes it. Not you.

Hi Jason.

If you need any other recommendations to fix the issue, I can vouch for Chestertons, John installed, pressure tested the oil pipes in my 68 cars sills. He's a straight talking guy who has been involved with quite a few ddkers cars.

I can do it mate, with some basic plumbing fittings and fibreglass it will be a doddle and a thousand times better than before. Shouldn't take more than a half day and I'm free next Thursday.

Plumbing fittings might have worked. Certainly better than 43 jubilee clips and a bucket of wishful thinking.

Jason if you read what I posted, you will see that I'm pointing the legal eagles away.

I think a thread like this is helpful because with old cars we all have to go through this from time to time. I don't have problem with sharing, and I thought Alan came off really professional to comment openly about the "some would consider substandard" work completed on the say so of the customer. I don't like to see people's integrity questioned and one issue now is that there is rubber pipe in situ, and no metal pipe within it, which appears to be at odds with Alan's account of the repair.

A lot of cars pass through a garage and while one might remember the repair, a conversation with the customer about not fixing it "properly", the brazing and the rubber hose, it's entirely plausible to me that one might forget about the section bridged entirely by rubber hose with jubilee clips. If on the other hand, that categorically was not part of the repair plan he's going to have to look in the whites of his mechanic or subcontractor's eyes and ask if they did the work he understood them to have done. If they did, we can only assume the repair failed and the subsequent owner tried a new repair.

Either way, there's no recourse against the garage. Their only contract is with their immediate customer. There are a few exceptions where liability would extend further, e.g. if somebody's life is put in danger as a consequence of a professional failing to use a reasonable level of care. Anyway, I think that's all moot.

On the matter of the bitter taste - I'm sorry to give you tough love but I was amazed this is still hanging around. You need to get this thing fixed smartish, and quality - so you can move on and enjoy the car. It's happened, suck it up. The £x,000 to fix it is bitter, but sitting staring at it for 6 months is only compounding that. Nevertheless, if you've really had it with this car / old cars, dm me your selling price.

It’s not been hanging around Rob and I’ve not been staring at it to be honest. It’s been 6 months since finding the leak and has been in the garage over the winter in between other cars. I’ve just started taking those out - which is why it’s become accessible again and only now had its open heart surgery.

There’s definitely been a reluctance to start the surgery though you’re right, knowing the outcome is going to be big £££ when I do and that money is being used on other things at the moment.

But life is a balancing act. Not everyone can throw £££ at every problem they encounter immediately I suspect…so it will be done in time as and when I can and based on what I keep finding and the possible ways forward people are helping with.
