Episode 36: Why has it been so long since episode 35?

The car had at some point in its life, been fitted with after market aircon. As i am sure many of you have experiences yourself, this involves hacking huge chunks of metal out of the front bulkhead.

Exhibit 1. From the front bulkhead behind the toe board


Barry then miraculously makes it disappear



And another in the horizontal deck in the luggage compartment




Typical rot at the dash end/screen surround which was given the usual Carter treatment



Bit thin on the screen rubber support



General scabiness



Gotta go!





Repair pieces fabricated





And presto, good as new....

Episode 37: The other end of the dash.... unsurprisingly crappier than the first....

And with that, the answer to the question 'will it ever end?' is yes, that was pretty much Barry's work completed.

3 months of hard slog but well worth it.

Episode 38: Heavy metal

So this was the finished article, awaiting collection to go to the paintshop....

Episode 39: The paintman cometh

So the shell was delivered from Barry to DC Coachworks for the paint process.

Much time and effort spent turning the now slightly less shiny shell into a nice shiny shell again....

I debated whether or not to get barry to put the slot back after i noticed it was missing but we decided it wanst going to compromise the build as it wont be seen.

We did have 'closergate' though when after the car had gone to the paintshop and the wings had been removed, i noticed barry had fitted a post 72 wing closer on the offside - instead of the captive nuts welded on to the closer, it had the later square holes with the spire clip nuts.

Very kindly, barry made a trip to the paintshop and corrected this before the painting started so all good!

Any details of fitting the rear quarters?
I've already upset (only a little!) Barry by cutting mine back too far (so I can get to the end of the parcel shelf) and I'm so close to just opening the seam and taking it off properly.

Looks like you used the full quarter on yours? Some pics or details of the flange / hemming process would be great if you have any.

hi gary, i looked through all of barry's updates and i am afraid i didnt find any pictures of the rear quarters.

I am currently on holiday in India and back in a few weeks and i will take a look at the cd he gave me which contains many more photos than the ones he emailed to me. If there are any useful ones, i will post them. I presume you are looking for how the quarters are attached at the gutter and around the door jamb?

It’s probably fairly obvious looking at the car once I take the paint off, but there’s nothing like seeing some pics of the rebuild.

Episode 40- Much to catch up on

Frighteningly, its been 8 months since my last post. On the positive front, the restoration has continued. In the last chapter, the paint prep was underway.

yep, another DC special.

Embarrassingly, given the lack of updates, the car is almost finished...... aiming to be on the road in July. Was hoping to put the engine and gearbox in today but some logistical issues mean that isnt going to happen.....

I will provide updates in the coming weeks but am having a bit of a problem uploading photos - my upload speed seems to have experienced a catastrophic reduction following an 'upgrade' of the domestic network. That and i am off to Australia with work next friday for 2 weeks will mean unless i can get something sorted, the next updates will be painfully slow......

Wow, great progress! Not jealous at all...
