Relays will stay then...you are right about the low brightness of the halogens...not impressive...if it weren't for this thread I was going to up the wiring thickness serving the relays and from the relays to the headlamps, I had read that as an upgrade on the E Type forum as it has worked for them

Just done this conversion myself using the woodypeck LED's as the others have done. It is impressive the amount of light they emit. Prior to doing the conversion I measured the current on both high and low beam and got a reading of around 9A on each setting. After the conversion 3A. So efficiency and safety in one small reversible modification.

The headlight relay modification is a great mod as it protects the headlight switch and also the flasher switch contacts from the full load of the lighting system.

I also have LED stop and tail lamps and LED indicators installed. The indicators are not as straight forward and are not a plug and play modification as you need a LED flasher relay and wiring modifications. But it is all worth it if you run on a dynamo chasing system and have a relatively small battery as the current draw with these mods is hugely reduced but the light given off is improved in all cases.

Thinking of doing the rest of the lamps now.

They seem to favour the JW Speaker 8700

Some good pictures of comparisons between 4 different units. Some having built in DRL's and side lights.

I spoke with Steve again today at Woodypeck
He is going to send me 2 other versions with differing lumen levels which I shall install and do a comparison...

last nights test against the mini showed they were brighter than I thought, not to the point of being dazzling, but am interested if a lower lumen level might still be quite sufficient and possibly a little less brilliant...will also do the front side lights as they look odd in yellow next to the white...

will be back in a week or so...

On my 912 with the trucklite LEDs I've had no problem with the MOT. Far brighter lights and have never been flashed by any oncoming traffic getting miffed off etc....

I went with the Nolden ones via RPM Technik, built into some spare H4 buckets I had lying around, with new chrome adjustor rings from Eric at Autoforeign.
They are properly bright - not quite as bright as my M5, but not a million miles off. Excellent.
Clear lenses, which I think look cool but those with more subtle tastes might think are a bit blingy.

Glad u like them Richard. I have mine behind standard lenses but must say I like the "modern look!"

Had the MOT carried out on Friday expecting a fail because of the LED lamps....

Not even mentioned. Pass. No issues

I'm pleased for you. I'm always nervous when my MOT man checks the beam pattern but didn't think LED's had one?? If you got the pass then that's the important thing, well done

somewhat much later than expected I am able to report on the comparison lamps...but only briefly...as the 2 options, the G5 and 2S types that Steve sent didn't fit....although my wings are both supplied by Porsche, the dimensions of the headlamp bowls must be fractionally too small...




Steve had said this had happened to other customers who tried the G5 types, but even the 2S were too tight...it is all to do with the way in which the power lead enters the unit...in the case of the G5 and 2S it is from the rear, whereas the G6 is from underneath....thus reducing overall length by 10-15mm

I did however try the 2S and gaffer taped the unit into place to make a comparison....so similar in both dipped and main that I was happy to stay with my original G6 versions

strictly speaking both the 2S and G5 are lower lumen levels....but as I went for a drive last evening after dark and no-one flashed me I am happy with what I have....


so these are the G6






so....if you want to do this upgrade, and have original old wings then you should be able to try out the 2S types....if in doubt I think the G6 is a safer bet....but either way, give Steve a call....very friendly to deal with and they are great value

it is so much more relaxing being able to actually see where I am going....

Having had a pair of expensive HID conversions short badly on me I reverted last year to the standard LHD H4 units my car came from the states with- I actually prefer the look anyway.
I'm now thinking of upgrading the bulbs to LEDS to combat West Cork, Ireland winter darkness.

Use the LED bulbs that I've got fitted to my 964 .. From woodpecker or whatever the co is called. Do a search for my post on here. I'm still impressed with them for only £58 ish outlay .
