Complete strip of the front coolant cross-over pipework that is designed to corrode in about 4 to 5 years. I've got away with it by changing one pipe after another and other trick too, but it is leaking again albeit not much but an upcoming French trip means the car has to be right.
Oddly, this is a job that will enhance the car's value bit like the IMS bearing on the earlier car. Done using all the right parts and the right people inc the suspension re-alignment on the receipt will be good to have when the day comes to sell.

If I bought the parts from a third party, £480 ish for the kit, coolant fluid etc anther £50, suspension re-align about £100, labour is free.
Price to drive in and drive out all done is £1050, thus the labour is around £420.

At least my body will survive the action...

15 years ago easy drive way job, 2 lazy days, but those days are behind me now.

Is it worth it?
Sports cars are nice, but hard to justify.

Rebuilt the headlight that fell out with a new lenses sourced via fleabay, correct original Bosch one as well

Problem though, I’ve figured out why it dropped out in the first place, the hole for the screw at the bottom of the light used to hold it in, is now bigger than the screw, so guess what, the screw falls out. How do I solve this then, thoughts on a post card

I have had this before. I ground off the nut which was nadgered, masked up the wing and welded a new nut on.

I don’t want to teach you to suck eggs but they are held on by two screws . There is a larger one with a rubber washer that holds the headlight unit to the wing, and then a smaller screw which screws into the larger one to hold the trim ring in place. Just checking you are not looking at the outer M4 screw and the M6 hole designed for the inner one. Apols if you know all this, or if the early cars are different to the 964 I am familiar with

If it is an early 911, think the two or three threads they put into that is an M5 x 0.8 pitch?

If so, something like a ‘U’ clip would work, but you would need to file off the surplus bit of the original welded on thread bit where the screw did go through, for these to fit flush?

Rivnut will work just as well, still need to grind off the old one with poor access. I used an electric file like this as it is best access wise



I would avoid bending the tab forward for access too much as it will weaken it and it could shear when you move it back to the right position

+1 for the rivnut approach but beware of access for the rivet tool head.

The angle of the thread on the bowl to the rim screw is quite critical so get it good and square to that bracket!

Drive my daughter’s boyfriend back home … first time in a Porsche for him… you forget how raw an early car is when your sat next to a normal person explaining to him about the slight smell of fumes , wind noise etc . He was surprised it was till quick for a 52 year old car

It's a bit fiddly in there. If welding a nut to the back of the tab, avoid welding your mole grips to the car. You would think nobody could be that inept but it happened.

Put an air freshener in my camper…

They do smell good, getting the DDK signature smell wasn’t easy!
