Got rid of my plastic switches that were fitted at some point and fitted the proper lovely metal stalks the car should have. Weird how lovely it is to get a no bend positive clunk when indicating

Old first then new.

Interesting, every day's a school day. I assume later cars had plastic VW switches as my 79 does. Did you just change the levers Ant?

It was an ok job actually. Wheel and cowl off then the lever and switch comes out with two screws. Big plug connector and about 5 spade connectors. The metal ones are for upto MY75.

Coming back from the hillclinb at Shelsley Walsh the other weekend in the 911 got caught in a flood in the middle of Kidderminster.
Never seem so much water arrive so quickly, all rain and some sewage too...

Got home and on the Monday the pedals were in water in the floor, almost a designed-in 'sump' for the car and it was not a good sight.

The 'well' looked in trouble with rust in the steel and all that. so time for some action.

It has been about 32 years since I removed the pedal assembly and over those years a regular squirt of WD40 and years of shoe dust led to a right mix, so it all had to came out for cleaning, painting, lubricating and re-fitting before the rust got worse. It also gave me the chance to check the clutch cable.

With the pedal assembly all out, cleaned the lot up and re-painted with Hammerite smooth (gloss) black, a lot of cleaning and checking the bushes which are the originals from 1973 and all perfect (!).

Getting it all back in was a faff but all ok and as smooth as could be. Fresh nuts and bolts always look nice and good until I have to sell the car.

Picture found in an on-line local paper, and just before the 12" watery mix was 'negotiated', slowly....

Off to Shelsley in it in 2 weekend's time, big Championship meeting.

The outing in the 911 was just about a weekend of nostalgia, the chance to remember the years way back, a fab weekend, but there were several reasons not to think about going back to the 911 as the 'every-day' hillclimb car it was 20+ years ago and had been for 13 years.
A great car for me in the day.
The Lola will probably be the last car I hillclimb, but the Boxster is tempting!

What's the issue? And who's fixing it for you? (I haven't looked at the gearbox situation yet on my car.)

Can it be all done in time for Shelsley Jonathan?

At least one bearing collapsed and damaged the casing. It’s being done by an old friend who has years of experience with Porsche.
The gearbox has done many years of competition, and been remarkably reliable, so I can’t really be surprised.
Unlikely that it will be ready for Shelsley Graham, probably going to be a weekend playing in the 914/6

My day was spent doing a 520-mile round trip up to Greatworth Classics to collect a pair of 'glass bumpers for the 914 (thanks Angus), then back down to Steve Kerti's at Dunkeswell, near Honiton, and then home. Good old T5 was a pleasure to drive (mind you, the Audi TT seats make a huge difference...).
