As Graham 911Hillclimber said above. I would add that my car is not standard but built as an ST. As far as I am aware the factory did not apply any additional coating around the suspension tops for the ST.

Took a short spin to the Ponderosa restaurant, near the Horseshoe Pass on the A542, south of Ruthin - a spot well known to a number of DDKers.
There were a number of classic cars in the car park - including a Lotus, Triumph TR4 and a 914/6 which I think is owned by a DDKer on here.
Dry, mild weather and light traffic made for a good trip.

Took my 73T with a well used 3.2 in it for a run to Prescott hill last weekend, ran fabulously, even my wife said she was well impressed...

Sometimes the car starts with a small belch of blue smoke after a long stand (say 3 to 4 weeks) and sometime it just starts without that belch.

The engine i think is about 140K miles now and well used by me during 13 years of hillclimbing the car, so some blue smoke is expected (?).

In a real quandary to rebuild the engine this Xmas while my body can still get under the car (etc), or to simply leave the engine alone and look the other way.

A £3K engine rebuild (DIY) would be nice and help enhance the car's low value, also give me something to do!

I’m going against the grain on this one and saying do it this winter whilst you can still do it yourself, as you say. More satisfying, more cost effective plus you don’t know what is going on in there

Yes, I'm 72 and 10 years ago I would get the drive train out quickly and back in just a bit slower due to gravity fighting me all the way.

Not sure how much longer i can do this heavy car stuff, and I'm buggered if I'm going to pay £10+ for a pro to do what I can do with ease!

This engine has only started a few belches in the last 12 months, prior to this never, so guides/seals at minimum so a crank out rebuild.

We can still get in/out of the car with ease (plenty of practice over the last 34 years) so i hope we can keep it for a few more years yet so would
get some thing out of the rebuild before selling some years ahead, sort of justifies things.

Cannot stress the need to have a project to focus on over the winter for my wellbeing!

No more room for motorcycles or bikes but would love to do another Honda. That would cost as much as this engine rebuild....

Flachbau back at Greatworth Classics after a 900+ mile shakedown trip to Spa 6 hour classic in Belgium and back -ran great - goes like a train - 130 mph on German autobahn - just needs roof sorting- booked for early December and then will be coming home

Never, ever, again.....

Back to Chris at CG today to have the front A-arm original bushes replaced having been squeaking like rusty bed springs for the past two years.

No-one could figure out where the noise was coming from until my visit here back in July when Chris hung off the front of the car on the ramp. He taped up the torsion bars with a ton of insulation tape as a temporary fix and that worked great for a while but now it’s time to do it properly whilst preserving the original A-arms…


The bushes have gone oval…

Fortunately no water has got into the journals and corroded them - the car has seen very little wet running and no salt either.

He fits the new bushing into the outer flanges using a vice and then slowly compresses the flange & bushing onto the A-arm, waiting to let the rubber expand, using a 10-tonne press and some washing up liquid to lubricate:

Just need to check the geometry now and then I’ll be away…

Decided to draw-up a Winter TLC for the 911.

Have decided to leave the engine as it is, I'll smile at the belch of blue smoke on start up after a long stand in the garage.

When blue comes out while driving I'll consider my options. Might be dead by then!

This move has saved about £3K, so some pocket money to spend elsewhere to make the car just a bit more nice to drive generally, and this comes down to NVH in several spots, made more noticeable since having hearing aids
a few months ago. I catch every shrill and crack and pop now.
The world sounds nicer without them!

List so far is:
Full engine service
New anti rioll bar bushes all round
Check for play in the 4 CV joints
Check rear wheel bearings (original 1976 items)
Get the heater controls to full function smoothly (dash control unit)
Ease the driver's door lock, I fear snapping the key every time, I know what the issue is.
New RHD front floor mats
Engine damper pad on bulkhead
New Bosch wiper blades
Get instrument lights to illuminate evenly as everyone else's do.

That sounds a much better plan, Graham!
Leave the CV joints and wheel bearings alone, if they needed attention, you would know about it already. Once you take them out, you will inevitably need new ones ……….
And take out your hearing aids before you drive it!!!!!
