Indeed - I’ll dig out photos I took doing just that. Amazing.

So it the afternoon before I got to work on the 914 again. First I started to look at the gearbox side UJ. It took me 15 mins to get the clip off! Then another 10 mins to work off the UJ. Strange because it's meant to be looser so can be removed by hand. Looks like it needs replacing because of wear but I'm struggling to find a source of UJ with 33 teeth.

Here is a very good video and how to rebuild the UJs

Then I when to removing the hub. I used a combination of M12 bolts and nuts to slowly move the hub. Then the hub hammer did the rest.

I was so excited when the bearing from the freezer went in with only finger pressure but it was shorted lived. The inner race separated when I was cleaning the frozen off it. Perhaps I didn't wait long enough but the hub was reluctant to go into the bearing. I tried to tap it in but should of used an installer like in the picture. I've decided to get another bearing. Doesn't anyone have a suggestion other than Design911? Unfortunately, the car is now on an axle stand. Exactly the situation I was looking to avoid.

Here is a very good guide. I should of read completely before guessing.

The rumour was that using 914 parts would be the answer. Andy (Lightweight_911) had kindly supplied me with some 914 Output shafts, and I picked up some 914 C.V's and Driveshafts on Germany Ebay. The 914 Driveshafts are 47,0cm long, the magic number I needed was 41.5cm , so after considering having the 914 shafts shortened ( don't really know how this would be done without he things snapping when in use ) I looked again at the original Driveshafts that came with the car.........41.5cm!!! and these have the same splines as the 914 C.V joint !!! Can it really be that straight forward

So long story short....I believe that this is finally the correct combination:

All the C.V's are currently in a friends Ultrasonic Cleaning Bath, so I can check the condition. HOWEVER, I do need another 901 driveshaft if anyone has one lying around....the other Shaft that was fitted looks like it came from something else.

I believe that this is the original, and what I need:
- 41.5cm Length
- 27.0MM Across Splines
- 33 Splines

Not sure if this is of any use.....But I remember having my own battle with 33 spline driveshafts.

I used these on the 912, surprisingly good:

That's some tunnel, I didn't know it existed but have seen the road when walking to Golant via Penventinue.
I was looking forward to the show and parade but had to return home on Tuesday for the birth of grandchild number four, are there anymore local hillclimbs this year Keith ?

Picked up a new heart for the race car….

Should be interesting - it’s 996 3.4 with a 40% odd power increase over the outgoing 2.7. I will have to learn how to drive around a few new problems, like traction!

It’s easy in the dry - slicks and trick suspension etc, it is just the wet that’s a bit interesting. Super hard suspension and sub optimal tyres, no weight transfer to the rear to help with traction makes for many ‘I’ve got it, I’ve got it, oh no I haven’t!’ moments…

I can only soften off the dampers to help or disconnect the roll bars, the latter being a bit of a pain especially silly when pouring with rain!

None of it dissimilar to the 914, just amplified

Spent the morning clearing the hub and drive shaft to ensure they would go back together smoothly. Marked the wheel side green. Took the other UJ apart. Less wear on this the wheel side. New parts not coming until after 5 September.

Any ideas on how to remove the dowels? I have to transfer them across to the new UJ body. I tried the trick mentioned in Ian's video about using an old drill chuck. Unfortunately the drill chuck I bought off eBay wasn't large enough.

Then I took the new wheel bearing out of the freezer and tired to fit. However, no amount of bashing would entice it to move more than a fraction in. It came apart when I removed it. New one ordered will leave in the freezer for a full 48 hours this time. That is what worked last time. Almost had a cry by the car. This is really testing me. For anyone that is interested the bearing spec is 42mm inner, 75mm outer and 37mm width. Found another source but a little more expensive.

I presume you mean the scroll pin 'dowels' in the CV joint housing Neil?

Usually very tight and very obstinate!

Personally i would:
Drown the pins with WD40 or similar.
Grip the pin in a vice so to compress the 'scroll' a touch (won't be much more than that).
Then ease/ twist the CV housing to and fro slightly and see if the pin gets to move a touch, then more and so on. Once they start to wiggle free you are nearly home.
The chuck is a good idea as the 3 fingers/jaws tend to compress the scroll when it is tightened.

If they will not move (be ready for that) then simply buy 4 nice new ones or 8 if doing them all for the new CV joints. The new ones will have a chamfered end which is a lead-in to allow the pin to be squeezed in using the vice or tap it in with a small hammer.

I would go straight for the latter fix, buy new ones. (Design911 maybe as a source)

These things are a real pain even to Wayne who eats this stuff for breakfast; most people hate CV joints and you are finding out why, you are certainly not alone.

I'm in that club too, hate them esp the bloody grease.

Luckily no CV grease fun today.
I feel your pain Neil!

I had the much more enjoyable time of a Bentley car club event, packed the showroom car park out with a properly diverse range of cars. Good to see the petrol head vibe isn’t dead in a modern car company! :)

Neil - Screwfix do a pretty good set of drifts (5 sizes I think) They are long, so might need cutting down but should work. Mine always tapped out ok to be honest

Otherwise twist them out with a decent set of mole grips

What did you do in/on/for your Porsche today?

Post by hot66 »

Sunny day so went into the garage to get the spyder out , but as soon as I opened the garage door I couldn’t help myself and went straight to the 73 and thrashed that around the lanes instead 8)

Image

Eventually got back home as I’d emptied the tank and decided again to take the spyder out in the sun ….. 5 mins later and I was out ragging the 964 instead : lol:

I do love the spyder but ultimately both 911’s are to me more fun and involving to drive , even though the spyder is the quicker car. Saying that, if my wife wants us to go for drive out into the dales to one of our favorite pubs she will always want us to take the spyder.

True for us too.

The 911 is driven only a few times, a very alive car which she tolerates as she well knows it needs using to stay fit.
Used to drive the 911 3000 miles a year when we hillclimbed it.

She has no probs with us using the Boxster almost at anytime unless parking may be a tight fit at a venue.

Approves of the big Skoda overall....
