Back on BaT having sold for $91,500 last year.

The Leonard collection went for a total of £7.5 million, including £430k for an 1973 RS and £93,500 for a 1971 2.2T

And let's not forget £55k for a tank

and £220k+ commission for Collecting Cars. That's not a bad evening's work for them!

The book value on their accounts was £383,920 more than that ( cars owned by the company ) - maybe not the shrewdest of investments ( but also a corporation tax offset, so perhaps not too bad ) , but nice to have owned them all the same !

A mix of....
Boredom.
Sick of looking after them all and keeping them mint.
Kids have grown up and less interested in cars now.
Covid made re-assess life priorities.
Enjoyed finding them all now just wants to enjoy road tripping a smaller number.

How good they were as an investment depends on how much you paid for them originally...but when you own the company and have built the collection up from nothing and bought and sold hundreds (not just porsches) to make all the money to be able to own them it's a pretty impressive feat...

The "would make a handsome addition to any collection" cliche that CC uses all the time is an odd kind of snobbery. It implies that almost everyone naturally has a 'collection' of cars, not just some cars or, heaven forbid, a car. Enthusiasts may own multiple cars, but I tend to think that a different type of person owns, or talks about owning, 'a collection of cars'. I wonder how much enjoyment Mr Leonard really derived from his?

Car ownership means different things to different people.

Some people spend 10 years restoring a car within an inch of its life then sell it the second it is finished and start on something else.

Some people buy a car, use it, enjoy it short term, sell it, buy another car and repeat...

Some people buy a car, use it all the time and keep it for their lifetime.

Some people buy a car hardly ever use it but get enjoyment from cleaning and polishing it driving for 20 mins on a Sunday and putting it away again.

Some people buy a car, never drive it on the road and only blast it up a hill for 60 seconds at a time in the summer.

Some people like hunting down rare models all round the world, building a collection and using their favourite ones whenever they can....

Everyone is different.

We should worry less about what makes others happy and just concentrate on what makes ourselves happy imho

Yes, a good list and more combo's can be added too.
Same sentiments will apply to boats, watches, cameras and other diverse objects.

Good we all have the choice but always restricted by our space and finance.
