I have hand painted 2 pack quite a few times over the years Gary (whole underside of the 914) - I have also been more irresponsible than that in my youth...

Anyhow, even if hand painting use a really good mask. The smell is unbelievable, and it gets to you in a medical kind of way that is not that pleasant! Put it this way, if all is not well as you read Porsche Post the following day (or before) you have inhaled too much...

Having pushed my luck a few times I am enjoying what remains of my nine lives and not using it anymore!! Go steady....

I’ve got a good mask, so good in fact I’m completely unaware of the grinding, welding and painting smells in the garage until I leave the house and come back!

Cheers Barry, Good advice on the spraying, maybe I’ll use a roller and leave the garage door open! I’m not really set up for spraying properly anyway.

Yes, that might work: even then rig some fans or wheel it outside.

I cannot stress enough how potent this stuff it: there's something very cloying about it that really gets deep into you.

Wayne: yes I generally use 3M 7503 Silicon twin filter masks with high grade filters as my go-to set up for grinding and blowing the odd area in. When I spoke to 3M, despite the fact they are rated P3 for particles, for nuisance gases and so on, they're absolutely not rated for painting 2K or epoxy. I think if you were in a booth with the vapour being actively extracted at many changes per minute, the odd waft would be one thing, but using the mask as the principle barrier is another.

DIY spraying inevitably means the room / garage starts off O.K., you get engrossed with your work and before you know it, you can barely see across the space. In the case of an attached garage, the smell will travel through several rooms.

We've all done it and I'm sure as a once-in-a-decade DIY'er you'd get away with it. On the other hand, the stakes are higher now: family responsibilitie and commitments, becoming 'year wealthy' and hopefully generally being more sensible (should) equal less chances being taken.

Gary: you might find it goes on and then just sits there wet for ages. Don't panic, the products I've used have sat there all wet and sticky and just don't seem to do anything. Just walk away and next thing you know it's gone rock hard. It seems to behave very differently to a 2K or cellulose where it starts to flash off almost straight away.

First coat (roller and brush for fiddly bits) is on. Think it will look OK. Also didn’t die, and it doesn’t stink too much, I guess not atomising it really helps.

Not posting any pics until it looks better though!

Well, I am now feeling slightly weird... but more importantly I’ve got a full coat of paint on. No doubt I’ve missed a few bits but plenty of time yet to touch it in.

When I painted my 911 way back I used cellulose in a one car garage...
You come out far far higher than 'weird', but I was young then, and still alive. Best not to get too close to these modern potions I think.

I remember spraying a Volvo in a dark red/maroon shade of cellulose many years ago - I was wearing a mask so didn't feel weird - but certainly looked weird for a while afterwards (with my hair a subtle shade of maroon !) ...

A little more cleaning and painting today for the front inner arches. Although I’d cleaned the whole thing I was only planning to paint edges, welds and repairs like before but mixed up too much paint so did it all!





Can never have to much epoxy under here so it hasn’t gone to waste.

I’ve lost my garage mojo completely. Everything is so close yet so far.

I then re-read Jamie’s ‘back in beige’ thread last night, then couldn’t sleep and literally had nightmares

So for the first time in a long time I’ve dragged myself out to the garage.

Place is a shithole which doesn’t help my mood so I think to get my mojo back I need a day of tidying.

One day it will be a straight car with paint on!

We all go through phases like this Gary - &, ironically, when all/most of the sh*t jobs have already been accomplished.

I think it might be because we've actually enjoyed overcoming all of the obstacles & don't really want it to end ...

Spend the day tidying up along with some uplifting 'tunes' blaring out & I'm sure you'll get your enthusiasm back !!
