MFI and AFR meters .. you will never be bored again

Used the RAC european brake down cover yesterday and today on the Boxster.
Yesterday, called them at 4.00pm about my 5 cylinder car.
Local mechanic arrived 50 mins later and diogised a faulty plug coil.
By agreement I took the car to his local base, a small but very well presented facility this morning, could have taken it last evening.

I happened to have a new plug coil with me( long story) and he installed it in 20 mins. Cylinder #5.
By 10am this morning I was sorted.

I'm impressed by that.
RAC called me 4 times to check how things were, and even the OPC in Salzburg called this morning as promised.
I'm impressed by that too!!

That is much better than their UK service

Never used the UK system, but the recent Euro experience was really good, BUT, I had the part needed in the boot!
The mechanic was stunned I had a coil pack.
I bought one because a friend of a ddk' had a similar experience in Italy and had no spares, and getting the part was difficult.

I bought one for £35 as Insurance 4 years ago. Been sliding around in the boot since.
I will try to buy another at OPC Salzburg on Monday, but will now have to change them all because if one has gone, others must be getting close.....

A simple diy job I think when home.

wow i'm impressed, but also has made me think about spares I should be carrying. Coil pack wasn't on my list on this years euro trip. Maybe it should be for next

Timely advice... Going to be going around Wales post LMC in the Boxster so it wouldn't hurt to have one handy

I am bound to say have one!
It made the whole event easy, and at £35 nothing in the cost of a Euro trip.
The nearest OPC is an hour away, but doubt they would have one in stock.
I am not in a remote place but if you were and facing a non English speaking garage owner in a village...no fun in that.

I have emailed the OPC to see if he has one. We go to Salzburg next, so would be silly not to get one if I can.
Feel a bit vulnerable with out one!

In all this mini-adventure, the Salzburg OPC offered to check the car over if I bring it to them if I wish.

The garage who fitted the part was an ARBO facility, a sort of Austrian rac with good workshops.
They were really good and could not do enough for us. 11/10.

The fault, going to 5 pots, was when the engine has good and hot. When it was stone cold it was perfect.
Mine failed after 3 days of high speed runs and intense traffic, the likes of which I have never seen before around Munich due to motorway widening.
The engine going into a limp home mode, and is difficult in traffic.
Get one!

Concerned that the sole remaining Bosch rpm transducer in Europe wouldn't arrive in time for LMC as DHL was showing it was stuck in Germany.

I went to Porsche yesterday and bought the only one they had and so was waiting for it to be delivered to them from their central warehouse.

That of course meant that the Bosch one from Germany arrived this morning.

Calls cancelled, part fitted, works as expected (very happy no issues with the microswitch or cut off in the MFI).

I always carry one. I periodically inspect them - if there are any cracks where they bolt up then you are on borrowed time…

It will take longer to get the car up on stands and the wheels off (for visibility and ease of crawling around under there) than it will to replace them.

Oh I'm getting one. It's never a problem until it's a problem, and apart from a plug and oil change along with changing the pads, discs and pipes the Boxster gives me way more love than I give it.

I'm emailing a very helpful English speaking Salzburg OPC right now to see if they have the right one or can get one before next Tuesday morning.
Want to replace my spare!
The old original unit looks good.
Seems the failure occurs when really hot, ok up to then, but a real gamble.
The guy laughed when I said he could not replace it inside of 20 mins. He was right!

Will change all 6 and keep the recent one and another in the boot when home.
About £200 for 6

are they the same on the 3.4 dfi as well as the 2.9 ? I might get one as a spare too for my 2010 spyder as they look to be cheap as chips

Not too sure.
Just reserved one at the local Salzburg OPC. He wanted the vin number as there are several types, but design911 list only one type for my car. The part fits all manner of similar age Porsche engines (2009 etc).
They had 3 in stock which was a surprise.
Porsche price for one is 68 Euro inc all taxes.
Design911 price is around £40 when delivered for one.
They do a pack of 6 so hope to be a bit cheaper.

Not sure about this particular coil pack….
But “typically” modern coil packs fail due to overheating and often that’s because the spark plug has a wide gap (silly long service schedule) and the coil is straining to fire it. Last time I had a coil pack go, the plug was definitely due a replacement.

Much the same in the 996, changed all of them but then it has just nudged on to 180,000 miles and no record of them being changed before (or the IMS for that matter)
