FWIW I bought the whole lock panel even though I only need the bottom 6 inches. Just to ensure I get an accurate shape. Also, you can get a camera phone in the wheel arch and photo this from the back to see what's going on in terms of previous repairs.

If you’ve got a hole there I’d put reasonable money on the kidney bowl being toast as the mud collects between that and the area where the filler is.

I purchased kidney bowls because they are perforated. They don’t look to bad but need work.

I was told they are factory original type still on the car with drainage hole at the bottom of the kidney bowl….

Looks like lead filled under the filler, uneven surface. Third picture shows the next sill on passenger side. I’m wondering if it’s original because it has three holes spaced along the sill and another larger drainage hole to the front?

I wonder what I will find under that…. Hahaha

Oh well, not bad considering the front and rear wings and doors are pretty good. Including the inners wings and roof. At the moment the kidney bowls front partition and a poor repair to the top of the door edge are all questionable and needing repair. I can live with that.

If it's been in Africa for long, it might be like my New Mexico car. Not much thrown up from the back wheels to corrode the vertical section of the kidney bowl, but where you show corrosion at the base of the door lock panel, water has come down through the top of the sill and corroded the top of the forward section of the kidney bowl only.

The whole area has to go really.if the lock panel has rotted, so will the kidneys.Lower section of rear quarter has to be cut off.

Can i get a small repair panel to repair the bottom area of the lock panel, who sells this particular panel because I can only find the full panel?

What are my options?

Or do I have to buy a complete lock panel, or would a skilled metal guy cut out the bottom section and make something up? Seems pointless losing the whole lock panel when 75% of it is such good metal without corrosion.

the complete lock panel is not expensive.(under £100)You can cut a section,use whats required.Howevever.IF that area of the lock panel is rotted,then its a dime to a dollar the kidneys are gone as well.Only way to repair properly is to cut the rear wing thus.

Thanks and will get a new panel. I did see a few restos showing some of the rear wing removed to do surgery to the kidneys. I’m collecting all the panels prior to denting to the body shop. The wife will see a smaller bill….. I bloody hope so…. Hahah

It’s definitely opening the can of worms time. Agree as above the whole lot needs to come out.

If you are lucky the inner wing the kidney bowl is welded to will be ok. If not (like me on that side) it’s more metal work to rebuild the surface before the kidney can be fitted.

That area down by the bowls etc were as bad as Gary's 32 years ago!
My shell is so good else where mind, but all around the rear torsion bar tube area was evil.
Go deep, get it all gone, you will never regret it.

Just a note on buying repair panels.

You mentioned that you had a Dansk front lock panel. Take advice on here but I think Dansk panels tend to be a poorer fit than genuine Porsche or Restoration Design. I have used RD (made in Canada) and they have been great. They now sell through a distributor in Holland whose service is good.

Car doesn't look too bad compared to the usual horror stories with UK cars!

Yeah must admit I was a little worried before I started to strip the car. Concerned with findings. But I’m quite satisfied with outcome so far. Really enjoyed the past few weeks working on the car. Thanks for the info on the parts will see what’s available.

Before you cut the wing, make a stick to measure how far out the wing is from the inner body at a given point (sensibly this would be the arch- end of where you cut it)

Once it’s cut out that bit can be flappy and when you weld it back in it’s easy to put it too far out or too far in.

Also, done lose the stick!
