This is 2016, dudes.
Keeping irreplaceable photos on memory cards, phones, PCs - all inexcusable. Single point of failure.
Storage technology is fairly fragile (especially hard drives). People lose memory cards. A friend was burgled recently, they took the camera and laptop; 5 years of memories gone forever.

A cloud service with automatic photo upload from your phone / iPad / pc / camera is mandatory technology.

Google drive
OneDrive (Microsoft)
... there are a ton of them, they cost zero or peanuts and all work fine.

I wondered if the bit that bolts to the body should be straight ?

Richard, NON of that would work for me, such tech never does ever for me!
Then there is Microsoft changing operating systems without my asking, their last shot lost my pc saved pictures until I found them (by accident).
Complexity for its sake imho, but each to their own.


Tangerine, I think my bonnet hinges are like that but maybe your car had a good thump on one side (body out of jig alignment?), sorry if wrong, so have been bent to get panel fit??

Been ill for the last three weeks hence having time to consider whether to start a thread or not

I've not done much in my garage ,but decided I could at least have a sort out and get some panels stripped

I used UCS in leeds for my outer panels .I've tried soda blasting before and pretty much all the other methods of blasting ,but decided I'd give their process a go ..it was £40 a panel .....oven baked to remove filler paint etc , then into an acid bath for the rest ..neutraliser after that ...then clean panels and no distortion !

I don't think I'd consider this method for a body shell,,mine was just gently blasted underneath (after hand scraping the underseal off (about a week under there ) but to be able to drop off all the exterior panels and get them back in white metal was ace

Then a real quick D A to key the panels and a coat of etch

Those panels look remarkably good. Are they free of rust damage as they look?
I spent hours chemical stripping my rear lid so £40 a panel is a bargain!

I hand stripped the majority of my bodyshell ,but what a ball ache that is !,,the underside was lightly blasted just to be sure Any rust was removed or uncovered ,but I wasn't sure how I'd do the outer panels ..I was sick of the noise of my DA and my fingers ached from doing the bodyshell,,so the answer is

Yes they are pretty good .. I think there's the odd little bit on most of them , but the car is 45 years old . I was surprised how good they came out .. if I had an S or RS I'd probably change all of my panels ,,but I'm keen to build a nice road car that I can enjoy so I'm happy to repair the few niggles on these (my budget doesn't allow a full panel change either)

There is no distortion either and Phil who runs the company is very helpful.

My front and rear bumpers have come out absolutely as new ,, and I can imagine I've had spent weeks with stripper trying to clean around the rear mounting brackets etc

I rebuilt my 73T back in 1989, all DIY so I'm on the same page as you.
Just today made my mind up to take the car off the road for 2017, full strip to metal, check all the usual places and home paint again in cellulose.
There is a lot of satisfaction to keeping the original tin and the repairs are a good challenge!

You will save literally thousands!
I've recently taken early retirement so time is not an issue.

Whilst in 1989 it might have been somewhat common that Harry painted his granada front wing with a hoover

in 2016, your neighbours might think differently. As you're not living on a farm, or near a railway line or in the midst of nowhere in Lincs (other places are available), I fear you might have to consider possibly a plan B??

Hi Bert ,, how did you know I had a piccolo ?

Of course I shall be spraying using my old trusty hoover ,which I've just used to mince some beef and made some burgers

Seriously though ! Should clarify I do have use of an appropriate spray booth with coalescent filters air mask etc etc so please don't do 2k at home .........or cellulose for that matter they're both dangerous

plus of course it's really hard to get a good finish without extraction of dust/ paint etc and even harder to drive your 911 with no lungs !

Bit posh!

I used my new Machine Mart compressor and £20 spray gun.

The next door thing is very relevant today so point taken by me.

I've been told of a painter who will simply do a nice job and not hours and weeks of blocking down filler smeared all over the panels.
I've been in this discussion recently so will not side-track Tangerine's thread.

Good to save as much of the original metal as possible - new panels only as a 'must' imo.

Having stripped a lot of my own panels, that bake / acid / neutralise looks really good (& waaaaay easier) and @£40 a pop that's a bargain!

Re your comment if you had an 'S'/RS' - if you had one of those you'd definitely be trying to retain the original panels.
