Back home now. I left the car with a friend of a friend (work colleague) who lives in Rolling Hills. That's a nice place.

Been emailing soda blasting companies for quotes. The replies I've received so far are all asking for a more detailed explanation of the job. How simply can I explain this? "Blast 912 shell to bare metal, excluding underside of floor and inside wheel arches...". Confused now...

Why soda? In my experience all it does is make a mess and doesn't do as good a job as garnet ( for example). I would also get the underside done as well, that's where the problems will be.

I was really happy with Cleaning Consultants last time around and will be going back again.

Not the cheapest but really thorough, they get into every single nook and crannie saving countless hours later on.

Nick - dunno why soda - I just heard it was the best stuff. Just had a quote for garnet and it came in about 1/3rd the cost (£500), so if you say it's better than soda, double (sextuple?) bonus.

There's an oven bake-off place in Halifax that another DDKer used also caught my eye. No indication of price yet, but the results looked good, and he said they were careful with the speed of temperature increase and decrease, so his shell was fine.

Good news - got an email saying it's due to leave LA soon.

Bad news - the container got pulled for inspection by US customs, so it's delayed, and I have to pay a few hundred dollars for the privilege (how the f*** does that work?).

Tell me all about that! When my Beetle was held by US Customs for five days going INTO the USA, they billed me for the storage...

Arghhh, sons of bitches - $567 in inspection charges.

Got a transport guy on the case - he may be able to collect it on Monday!!!

A long and productive day!

Drove up to Cambridge with a journo friend from the US to help him move his new WW2 Dodge WC54 ambulance into storage near Thetford. Pretty slow drive up there. Here's it being filled with unleaded, which it burns at a rate of one gallon every 8 miles. The plum-coloured Fiesta in the foreground was my car for the day. Plum.

About midday I got a call from the shipper to tell me Beigebox had now fully cleared customs and was ready for collection. I called my transport guy, who luckily was in north Kent with an empty trailer, so he stopped by to pick it up. Great luck.

We stopped by on the way home to check it out.

The plan was to patch it up and crowbar it through an MOT for summer, then start working on it in Autumn, when Barry has a space in his schedule. Maybe being a bit optimistic.
