That sounds like a great idea but can you cut chrome vanadium with a hacksaw? Else what do you use?

A grinder is easiest. But a hacksaw would do it.

Here is one I ‘made’ for the clutch lines in the 964. The advantage of the ring spanner is it means you have loads more variations of the degree of approach than you would with an open ended spanner

You would want to cut it in this orientation for tightening something which you expect to apply some leverage too

Good to see a picture too.

Cut spanner a good idea indeed, but I think you may still have to remove the h/exchanger to get at it.
If it has been on for a long time, getting it off may be tricky.

Don't put front numbers plates on with sticky pads (despite what the plate seller says). The front on the 914 bends so it's hard to get a good contact. However, the rear plate was on very well and it took quite a bit to get off. Both plates drilled and screwed on now.

Final check of 914 for Le Mans. Trip starts on Wednesday with 2 days in Normandy. The car went to a garage which replaced the bonnet/boot cables, put new head gaskets on and took a mm off the left manifold so it was seat correctly. I cleaned all the starter contact points this morning. Started quickly and ran nicely. It was coughing a bit so I tuned the carbs a tiny bit richer than max rpm. PS Couldn't use our normal garage, Greatworth, because Mrs B refuses to drive the car more than 20 mins. PPS during her 20 mins drive back she managed to get a £100 ticket!!!

Good oil pressure. There was some oil underneath after my test drive but if coming from heat exchangers. Anyway I taking 5l of oil so let's see how we get on.

I'd ask to see their evidence that both pictures are one and the same car. There's nothing to prove the first picture is you as far as I can see. I think they'll have to come up with better than that.

I don't know what I did to the mixing screws but the car is now running badly on the idle circuit. I will have one more go tomorrow

It's always worth taking a picture of the position/orientation of the adjustment screws before you start & keeping a note of what changes you make (1/4 turn clockwise, 1/2 turn anticlockwise, etc) - then if there's no improvement (or it runs worse) it's easy to return to the starting point ...

A bit of an update, search over, I got a 993. Really happy with it. Picked it up from Cheshire so did snake pass to Ashbourne on the way back. Only scared myself once! It goes a bit better than the 912!

I found most of the issues. One of the linkage rods had become loose. The carburettors where balanced at idle but not higher. I had to cut the LHS thread further to get a nut on. Took for a spirited drive and did the mixture again. Moved the idle from 950 to 1200. Running much better but still not right about about 3500rpm. I will take it to a rolling road post Le Mans. It probably just the rings bedding so maybe needs different mains or air correction. Still small leaks from the rocker covers but I will have to live with that for now.

Since the last two times someone has tuned the car they have had to clean the idle jets I put another fuel filter inline

Those cheapie in line plastic fuel filters are not really the best thing to use in an air-cooled engine bay. For the cost you are far better off buying a small metal one.
