I took the 996 turbo to Curborough members' track afternoon. Wow, what an exciting day. It's not ideally suited to the course, coming into its own over 100mph, whereas the course is a short, sub-100mph sprint course. Nevertheless, it was probably the fastest car there save for possibly an Ariel Atom and a 991.2 GT3RS. Glorious t-shirt weather and a dry track. You don't want to come off because there's not much run off in a couple of spots, and what there is, is grass, which does little to slow you down before hitting the crash pads. Still, the car having been keyed on Thursday, I figured if I put it on its roof at least I wouldn't have to get the scratch fixed!

There was another german kettle there, a guards red 944, shared by a father and daughter, which mounted the "mole-hill" at speed at one point, before landing on the other side apparently unscathed.

First two times around with the stability management on I experienced plenty of close calls, skids and drifts, before the brave (foolish) passenger convinced me it would be easier with the stability management turned off. I wasn't convinced because I know the PSM is designed to subtly maintain stability during fast cornering. But knowing fortune favours the brave, and wanting to get a feel for the raw dynamics of the rubber on the tarmac, I pressed the PSM button and did the rest with it turned off.

It certainly was NOT easier, but it was faster, and it certainly made for more adrenaline. There were lots of wiggles, snap oversteer, travelling sideways, corrections, overcorrections, terrified application of power exiting a corner, heart in the mouth moments, but I managed to keep it off the grass - more than can be said for the GT3 RS. I crossed the finish line at 100mph (at least according to the speedo) which is faster than most sprint cars - aside from the single seaters, so all in all a fun and satisfactory day's driving, and the best value £10 one could possibly imagine spending.

The only downside, having not upturned the vehicle, is the scratch remained to be repaired when I got home...

After watching a couple of youtube videos of shouty americans conveying about 10 seconds worth of info in 15 minutes, utilising about £200 of detailing products, I knew all I had to do was get some sandpaper, sand down the 2ft long scratch, buff it up with some t-cut and it would be immaculate again - as easy as replacing a nearside bonnet spring.

Reality did not match entirely with my expectations. In actual fact, the results were way better than I thought. After four rounds of carefully sanding the clear coat before mechanical polishing at 1500rpm with t-cut, two scratches are gone completely, and although the deepest scratch is still visible, you could easily miss it. I'm reluctant to go deeper, knowing that a hundredth of a millimetre is the margin by which I could sand the paint itself and sieze defeat from the jaws of victory. Saturday 21st May 2022 I'm winning at life.

After the youngsters decided that they would rather watch some shrieky bilge on YouTube than spend quality time with their dad on a road trip to view a car, I thought I would take the 964 and enjoy the drive.

I avoided the main roads and wound my way to Chipping Norton on some lovely roads and reminded myself what a staggering good car that 964 is to drive. Plenty of grunt, makes a lively noise and brilliant handling.

I did come home with slightly less than I left with though, so a trophy is on the road for someone

I did Samual. A slightly odd choice, but should be fun to thrash around in. We are going to be a car down in 6 weeks, as the electric Golf goes back and the ID3 is built, so we have bought something to bridge the gap, put on an A-frame behind the motorhome and will then be my daily as I basically don’t go anywhere much these days. I approve. They sound unlike anything else. I’d have one for that alone.

Cheers. It is properly funny, put it in sport mode and despite a clever differential it is still in ditch finding mode. But in non sport it is quick and compliant, actually comfortable enough for an occasional long business trip.

It feels a bit like getting in a Renault 5 Turbo 30 years on. 145ps, 1,000kgs and go kart like steering

Gave the 3.2 in the Lola an oil change today.
Engine has done 6 race runs plus the rolling road, all without mercy, and certainly no running in mamby-pamby.

Running time probably 30 mins, and as the engine was virgin fresh, £80 later all done.

Some silver sparkle in the hot oil, and minimal shards of steel on the engine magnetic drain plug.

10 litres of Shell Helix in and a fresh 229 filter. Instant oil pressure and sounds a treat.
Should be a good insurance policy oil change.

Jetwashed the kidney bowls on the 3.2 with a view to waxing once dry. All looks/feels pretty solid in there, to be fair.

Drove to Santa Pod for the FIA main event.

Always a great day out, bit short on Top Fuel dragsters, but one did a 3.7 @ 301mph which is the fastest time recorded in Europe.

My car reminded me how blunt the ride is on the way home, need to toughen up before the drive to Le Mans!

Mind blowing.
Shame it was a single car run, but probably for the best as it was all over the place at the end!

I was a big big fan of drag racing in the 70/80's and saw the first 200 mph run way back.
Today, the times are stunning, with engines turning out around 12,000 BHP with quite crude tech to tie it all together.
The sound waves are incredible and not just to your ears.

You have to be there!
