OK so back in the real world, I've been contemplating the lower wing repair I'd done and how I was going to sort it out. In my mind it was really bad. So last night I went into the shed and had a look at it. It really isn't that bad at all. I sprayed it with primer and then looked at it from a load of different angles.
Along the join at one point it was standing slightly proud so I bashed that in with a stick of plastic. This eventually split the weld at taht point, so I flipped it over and welded up the split from the back and then linished, planished, burnished or whateverthefkished it back flat.
I'm pretty pleased with that now.
There are some ridges in the bigger curve at the bottom - I may smooth them out now. the whole thing's going to have some (a little bit) filler on it anyway so it's not hyper-critical but I think I can get it better - what can possibly go wrong?

Well it's no Barry or Jon door gap but it is better than the gap I've got on the other side of the car and I've been happy with that for the last 14 years, so yea I'm pleased with it.
I've got a couple of simple pieces behind the rear arch, and then that awkward sunroof drain tube/A post which I'm dreading a bit.
A new front wing came up for sale - couldn't have been timed better (I was about to make one good wing out of two crappy ones) so I bought it. Once this side is filled and primed I'm putting the car back on the road for a month so I can enjoy driving it for a while

....then I'm going to take the engine up to mike Bainbridge to remove gaskets placed there by the muppets that did my engine build
Then drive it a bit more
Then do the drivers side sills. I don't think they are nearly as bad as this side, the the front wing has been done.
Then build a spray booth and spray it.
Simples.

Under the bonnet I'll brush paint it in black like they did in 71 I believe

Another weekend, another progress report
Most of this weekend has been spent repairing daughter cars - one flat battery and two broken exhausts.
Not so much actual progress on the hot rod, but quite a leap forward in terms of mental attitude.
Firstly, the troublesome A pillar. This one has been causing me worry for the best part of a month now. Helpful advice from Jon and Barry amongst others has given me an idea of what to do, but also worried me about how bad it might actually be.
so Saturday morning I started cutting....
Not too bad. Nothing near the windscreen itself. However the bit of drain pipe I had exposed wasn't looking too clever, and when I moved it a bit it broke off! therefore had to cut higher
This was more like it - got back to solid pipe. In this next shot you can see I've been able to bend the pipe back a bit - which will make it easier to join onto.
I've been to B&Q today to look at what pipe they had in stock. I thought about copper or aluminium but with both of those aid be worried about sacrificial wossname (respect the chemistry!). I eventually found some steel pipe - in a 12mm diameter and 10mm diameter. The 12mm would let me sleeve the existing pipe and then be able to join it onto some 10mm pipe that I could then shape.
After a bit more thought though I realised I couldn't rustproof the inside of the pipe, so sooner or later I'll be back here again. I've decided therefore to buy some stainless tube in the same sizes - same plan, different material.
So whilst I've not finished the A post, it no longer holds any fear for me and I'm pretty confident about what I'm going to do - which is a big leap forward
