The news about your bonnet is a bit of a bummer, but on a slightly positive note maybe your luck is changing as at least it didn't fall off for once!

That’s not good ! As you say, could have been worse. Wonder why the safety catch didn’t hold it ?

I had exactly the same happen to me once in my 66 912 - on a test drive when I was selling it!

Fortunately the damage wasn't any where near as bad as yours.

My guess is it flew up so quickly with the 60mph wind that the catch didn't move fast enough. I'm going to put a camera in and see how the catches sit when shut. Maybe needs a stronger spring or better positioning.

The catch should be permanently in the right position held there by the spring. If the catch spindle was stiff (or stiffer than the spring) it might have stayed in the open position.

The hook moves freely, but I reckon if the hole is misaligned with the hook, it could be holding the hook in the open position when fully down, but as you lift it slowly the hook comes across and catches. If the spring were weak and the bonnet moved quickly, the hook might not return to its resting position quickly enough. That's my working theory until I investigate.

Alignment is critical to this and the rear catch.
Mis align either and you get a flying bonnet aor a stuck closed boot lid.

I used to design this stuff back in the 80's, body hardware, and making them assembly proof was hard!

Picked up one and a half period correct (I think) seats for the 911T in my lunch break. Just need a seat base now and a good upholsterer, if anybody knows one.

Also acquired while I was there a makeshift floorboard to use as a template and a rear quarter window catch (one of mine is broken) and some seat runners (possibly not correct).

Just spent at least an hour looking for the stupidly strong wrist pin clip from my mega expensive JE Pistons.
One escaped at Mach 20.
Utterly stupidly specified clip, must be 2 x the stiffness of the stock item.

Yet to assemble the other 6 in the engine, dreading it.

Found the bloody thing, but will order 2 spare clips as I'm sure this will be repeated.

Be thankful of your tidy garage now. Imagine a floor covered in wood shavings.
