Filters look ace. How did you diagnose the HT lead? Am assuming it wasn't a light show at night

Luck! Just spotted it arcing over to the engine. They are the type that grip the bare thread on the plug and it had gone loose. Quite good that you can take them apart so a bit of bending and reposition of the boots and all good!

I have some bangs and pops in the left carb. I also hate the air filters and the plumbing fitting on the right carb breather! There should be nothing from Homebase on my car! So here is the ‘before pics’…..

In terms of during, my friend Paul helped me strip the carbs, when we unscrewed the idle needles and the brass seat that should be part of the carb came out with all 4 screws. The previous owner had screwed them in so hard the needles locked into the brass insert and found it easier to release from the body of the carb rather than the needle! Got them off and fixed them back in the carb but not ideal. No wonder tuning was tough! I also changed the Venturis from 28 to 32 and changed the emulsion tubes and all the jets. Every one in there had been soldered and drilled. The floats were also totally open.

Still, they cleaned up really well.

Got some new air cleaners and also a new breather pipe and fitting. I also cleaned up the fuel rail. We also found out the linkage was bent on the right carb, due to the offset it had been bodged and was only 80% open at the butterfly. We had to weld and redrill the carb bracket.

Changed all the plugs and also found a ropey HT lead. All in all a great session! Paul also managed to get my temp gauge light and high beam lights working on the dash…something they have never done.

Well I am biased but I think the engine bay looks a lot better for it all!

That looks a lot clearer.

My 356 vents underneath the car. Someone has given me a vent tank for my 914. I think it's clearer than going into the right carburettor

Yep I chatted to him at open day, lovely lad, he was showing me the Jenvey prototype …I think I might get them to look at my gearbox next year, needs a rebuild I think but they offered to drive / evaluate before breaking it apart which is reassuring.

Awesome setup up there, inspires confidence.

As to Greatworth; I was suitably impressed by Sam and Angus, slow -and-easy approach pays off. This is my first time with them.
Angus even dabbled in hillclimbing some years back, so there's credibility!

Angus had a good look at the WEVO Shift Gate and fitting before he said they (Sam) can do it, thought that was a good approach.

Somewhat bored waiting for parts for the 3.2 engine, decided to make a few assembly tools.
First off was the cam sprocket holding tool #9191

About £110+ on line so worth making. Quite a tricky part to machine and took about 5 hours!
Proof loaded the tool this morning and passed with flying colours. Has to resist 85 lbft on 3 x 6mm dia pins with 30% of their side cut away.

My 1937 Drummond lathe paid for itself yet again. Found all the metal I needed from old project tools esp the Lambretta monoblock insertion tool.

Cost? About £0.10 for the 6mm high tensile bolts used for the pins.

Secondly, a semi sprung loaded support for the one timing chain which must be held vertically and tight when the case halves come together.
Bits of scrap this n that, cost £ zero.

Thirdly, and far more boring, the 3 con rod support frames for when the two case halves come together, a time of high stress!
Scrap sheet steel, cost £0.10 I guess.

I hope the pistons and rods arrive as promised, ie 2 to 3 weeks time.
