Saw your car at Slough swap meet Ollie, I decided to give my Crayford 914 a run there, ran beautifully but I'd forgotten that there's no heater !!!--good swapmeet as I managed to pick up a swb 912 front bumper as well.

You're right of course, work and weather has limited my time in the car, but I've had a stab at it over in the 'replicars' section.

Spotted yours too Ian, great looking car!

Also have no heater so was a tad cold on arrival... my knees were blue!

Turned my back for a moment and the car spat this out on the floor...

Did you just take it apart to weigh your friction plate?

He's only checking if the can sell it as "Nearly New"

I have some bangs and pops in the left carb. I also hate the air filters and the plumbing fitting on the right carb breather! There should be nothing from Homebase on my car! So here is the ‘before pics’…..

In terms of during, my friend Paul helped me strip the carbs, when we unscrewed the idle needles and the brass seat that should be part of the carb came out with all 4 screws. The previous owner had screwed them in so hard the needles locked into the brass insert and found it easier to release from the body of the carb rather than the needle! Got them off and fixed them back in the carb but not ideal. No wonder tuning was tough! I also changed the Venturis from 28 to 32 and changed the emulsion tubes and all the jets. Every one in there had been soldered and drilled. The floats were also totally open.

Still, they cleaned up really well.

Got some new air cleaners and also a new breather pipe and fitting. I also cleaned up the fuel rail. We also found out the linkage was bent on the right carb, due to the offset it had been bodged and was only 80% open at the butterfly. We had to weld and redrill the carb bracket.

Changed all the plugs and also found a ropey HT lead. All in all a great session! Paul also managed to get my temp gauge light and high beam lights working on the dash…something they have never done.

Well I am biased but I think the engine bay looks a lot better for it all!

Great to see lot's of projects on the go

Filters look ace. How did you diagnose the HT lead? Am assuming it wasn't a light show at night

Clutch went on the Passat this week so a full family shop in the Turbo. Who said Porsches aren't practical? It wasn't even half full.
