You could well be right Darren! Such are the myriad mysteries of the factory built race cars! Certainly none of the other build threads I have read here or on ESR have ever mentioned it in connection with the dead pedal so may be it is unrelated but hopefully someone will chime in here and answer the question!

Your post actually led me to an ESR thread where someone is querying a dead pedal once fitted and removed from his RHD SWB rally car......this would suggest it was always done this way?........I wonder if RHD 2.7RS's are equipped with a dead pedal?

This build has stalled a little of late, work being the main culprit, frustrating to say the least with mojo seriously deflated!

However in the absence of any colour at least my 'project within a project' has jumped forward and this week I received some rather exciting (for me!) photos

In the process of trying to fabricate a front oil cooler I was hunting down an original to confirm a few dimension to Olivier when I had a major dose of good fortune......as luck would have it I was put in touch with a motorsport and aviation company who had the exact 1974 Behr 23.014 to hand and I explained what I was trying to do. Fortunately they were keen to help but wanted to proceed under the basis of completing the cooler from start to finish, dismantling the original and taking CAD scans of both inside and out of the end caps.....it would mean that Olivier was no longer involved but he agreed it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Huge thanks to Olivier for his help and encouragement to date and time would show just how close and accurate his drawings produced from photographs actually were

After a few discussions a deal was agreed and we're now some way on, with all the cost in the development and tooling for the end cap castings it made no sense producing one cooler and therefore I have commissioned an initial batch of 10 units......these will be to the exact shape and dimensions of an original 1974 3.0 RS/RSR front central oil cooler and will be finished with an Aluchrom protective coating giving them a greenish NOS appearance.

They will be a very authentic reproduction of the highest quality which I'll soon be offering for sale.

....after a good few week of drawings being produced and discussions explaining the manufacture process....

...the advantage of having CAD scans of the both inside and out of the end caps (rather than just a mould casting of the outside) is of course that you can replicate the inside exactly....



...another piece of the jigsaw is the oil pressure relief valve built into the cooler. These are a fairly simple item consisting of the drain plug, spring and ball bearing. Fortunately it helps to have friends who can send photos and all dimensions of an original and all these items, including the spring with the correct operating pressure, are currently being fabricated.....

....alas with any project there is a degree of compromise and in this case, as a few no doubt will have noted, it's the core.

Originally a bar and plate item these days they are generally replaced with a tube and fin design when coolers get re-cored.....virtually impossible to get close to the original design, we looked at a number of possibilities and could have had a bar and plate core fabricated although this would have been to different dimensions and not an exact recreation so therefore not an option.....it was suggested that these could be manufactured in China which is a big producer however I was strongly advised against this due to the gauge of the aluminium being thicker which would have hindered performance, the quality of recycled aluminium generally used in China being to a lower specification and the weight of the cores which would have been far heavier. I don't doubt that there are manufacturers in China that could produce a core to a suitable standard and quality but go find them and for me it's not worth the risk!....

....ultimately this cooler needs to be of the highest quality, be tested to 10 Bar and perform to motorsport standards, I also wanted it to be to the exact dimensions of an original and therefore I accepted the professional advice and went with a proven supplier. Fabrication will soon start as soon as the end caps are machined .....
