I've started changing the oil after each track day/race so I took the opportunity to fit a new sump. Idea suggested by Gary Keohler two years ago in the 356 Registry Magazine. It took me ages to find somewhere I could machine the parts.

Gary isn't stupid. He built a machine that was used to win a Nobel prize. This magnet idea came from this.

The idea is to create a larger and stronger magnet.

As per calendar thread I made a trip to Center gravity to have the suspension checked out and lowered a little. I felt the front was a bit soft and turn in was a bit weird. Turns out the car had adjustable Koni classic sport inserts in the Boge struts…and they were set to absolute softest….result!

That together with re-indexing has transformed it. I wasn’t obsessed with a huge drop but the back was really high, so as per before and after pics below most of drop was at back. I know there has been much said about Center Gravity but they exceeded all my expectations. I was there from 0830 to 1915 until they were absolutely happy with it. Amazing attention to detail. And having seen the car underneath and inside the tubes etc I love it even more….it is really straight.

I guess paying out a decent clip of money can tend to make you want it to be better! But I have to say it is like a different car for the better. I knew it was a bit out as it headed left off the throttle and just felt a bit soggy and disappointing on the front. Early days and have only driven 40-50 miles but precise is probably the best word. At smallish roundabouts flick and flick with confidence I didn’t have before. Front is a bit stiffer but I think it is all the better for that. On faster winding roads it tracks great and that is where it is most noticeable for the better.

Next job sorting the tune….it has some big ass main jets (175) and small venturis (28) and some pops! Again no experience with 912s but it has no legs later in the rev range so my thought at least is to get it on a rolling road. Am on the list to get into Aldon Motorsport who did a great job with the 550 a respectable 140bhp no less.

Any other recommendations for tuning places ideally Midlands ish greatly appreciated!

As an aside maybe, but I have those Koni dampers and found mid way damping position just right with stock '73 front torsion bars in.

Has your car 14" rim diameters?

Jeez, those main jets are big! With those venturis, 125 would be nearer the mark!

Given the height at the back, I reckon that car previously had a 911 engine in it and now has a 4 cylinder. Also, bear in mind US cars were set up higher from the factory than Europe.

Also, do you have yellow front sidelights, or are they within the headlamp unit? I ask because I've a USA car with yellow sidelights and H1 lamps (no sidelight within). I'm on the verge of buying UK style front lenses because I half expect to get pulled over for yellow sidelights but also think it's fine.
