Gone but not forgotten

Installed my new push button starter in the 911 as per Andy LW's suggestion. All works a treat, no need to strain that weak tang of steel on the key barrel any more.
Bit awkward to do, but I really don't like car electrics.

2 more gremlins then decided to appear, both electrical.

A few years ago I bought most of an SC engine, rebuilt it and it has sat around since. It has a dynamo and all the bits needed to get it running, but I don’t need it because the one in the car is fine, so I advertised it and although there was loads of interest, some were put off because it wasn’t built by a "name" and I wasn’t confident because I hadn’t run it. I decided to keep it and avoid a career in retail.

Just recently I bought a bracket to attach a starter motor and I filled the engine with oil. I’d decided to run it, I was terrified, but I took the plunge and started it, which it did immediately. Tappets were noisy and oil miffed out of the filter housing, now sorted.

Carbs need more thorough setting up, but it sounds lovely and I’m quite pleased. The German Solexes which I’ve also rebuilt are behaving like the Chinese ones, which is reassuring sort of.

A productive Porsche day and I’m quite proud because this was my first of these engines, though I did build a VW van engine in the seventies which lasted 36,000 miles before the owner crashed it.

I am a firm believer that to build a stock normal Porsche air cooled engine is well within the skill set of a good DIY car mechanic type given a good manual and the right tools plus basic knowledge ie 'cleanliness is godliness'

Thanks! Most engines are pretty straightforward, but as I’m sure you know, things can go horribly wrong all too easily. The tiniest amount of dirt can destroy one in seconds. I think mine is fine, it definitely has good cases and heads, the rest too, but that’s all replaceable.

Drove out to the Cotswolds for a walk in my 914.

Ran nicely but not as smooth when pushed.

When I got home I decided to tune. I discovered the left/right carbs weren't balanced. With some effort I removed the linkage. I got the engine running much better. Then I tried to adjust the rod lengths but had to adjust the cable.

However, putting the ball joints back on with safety clips wasn't working so I removed a safety clip and lost it! How do I know what size I need! Ball is about 7mm and M5 thread. Is that a 7mm ball joint?

Unfortunately, rain stopped me before I could finish.

Got back to it and now balanced much better at idle and through the rpm range.

Hi all, a few pics of my new 912. Picked it up Friday and really happy with it so far. I am going to try and live with it for a bit before doing much to it but maybe just drop it down a touch. Look forward to meeting some of you soon.

I think his car was a 2.4S.

Different cars … both 2.4S though in the best colour

Mark’s is also a 2.4S , but black interior… Steve’s was brown interior from memory?
