Got one of those racing crank pulleys and that unicorn of a mag small fan housing (which had my name cast on it, not yours! ) from the same loft on Friday!

Grenade filter & element next week but my list is still very, very long!

.....I think you must be his new best friend Matt!

Glad you're building up your parts stash and very much look forward to following your build......I suspect it going to be a very special car! :thumbright:

......when you ask your knowledgeable friend if the cam covers on a 3.0RSR engine should be magnesium or aluminium and the reply comes.......'not too sure, let me check a real engine in the morning and I'll get back to you' 8)

I'm not too sure how this working class boy from Bethnal Green who lived in the same Council house for the first 18 years of his life got to mix in such illustrious circles but I certainly feel lucky that I do! :drunken:

The reason for the question is that I've decided to fit centre lube RSR cams.....as with all builds there's areas of compromise and this could have justifiably been one of them due to a) ....not many would notice....b)....cams are double the cost of non-lubed RSR cams....and c)...ultimately the gain is only around 5HP which you'd notice.....however, a 3.0RSR, as with all racing engines, had centre lubed cams so this is what it needs to be!

Another reason why this may be have been overlooked in the past is that centre oil fed cam/chain covers were nigh on impossible to find.....these days we're fortunate to have a few people remanufacturing these although nearly always in aluminium. Originally they would have been cast in magnesium although with the cases moving to aluminium, although unlikely, I just wondered if some of racing parts might have changed material too....but no, they remained magnesium.

In some respects a shame as I could have saved a few quid going ali but still, if they were mag that's how I'd like them to be and fortunately my good friend Ben Coles makes perfect identical reproductions, cast in the correct material just how they should be 8) .......

....thanks guys, and yes Mike that is my wish however as you well know these can be eye wateringly expensive on their own! :?

Albeit RSR spec (and it will certainly hold it's own in the environment) this isn't an engine being built for racing.....the car will see plenty of enthusiastic road miles, a few annual track days and hopefully an Alps trip or three.
The engine builder knows this and has often used the term 'easy horsepower'.....hitting the magic 300HP is important but it doesn't have to be a highly stressed 330HP time bomb!......'easy horsepower means doing all the things that give the power and numbers but also keeping things tractable.......naturally we'll cheat in this respect!

Engine man is looking at a couple of options for rockers and I'll share once the decision is made.

Cheers,

......Porsche porn of the highest order!

I was told that EB's racing engine tin was good but still incredibly impressed with these......they look beautifully made and accurate and should save a lot time when it comes to fitting....

.....can't wait for that day! :bounce:
