So far by swapping the front seats & removing the rear seat backs, fitting lightweight door panels & deleting the n/s battery, etc I've saved over 40 kg.

I haven't compared the new wheels/tyres yet ...

Made a bit more progress today.

A few more jobs completed in the front luggage compartment ... first task was to do something about the tatty heater motor cover:




- so I looked around to see if I had anything suitable to make a replacement cover from - &, as luck would have it, I found a sheet of 3mm black foam PVC which seemed ideal.

First stage was to make a simple card template:





Then cut out the shape from the plastic sheet & attach it to the repainted brackets





- & finally, using a hot air gun to warm the cover, it was bent to match the curvature of the brackets & attached





Once installed, although not perfect, it certainly looks a lot better than what was there before !





Next the refurbished - using a combination of bleach, Jif & brillo pads - washer bottle & pump were refitted with new pvc tubing






To finish off this area I just need to fabricate a suitable bonnet prop/stay ...

At the other end of the car I finally got round to installing the oil catch tank & associated oil vent hoses.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, due to the prices being asked for SWF washer bottles I sourced a cheaper alternative - in the form of a VDO equivalent.

This was fitted in the right rear of the engine compartment:




The routing of the hoses is:

- from the neck of the oil filler to the right hand connection on the catch tank &
- from the left hand outlet on the catch tank to the vent pipe at the centre rear of the engine (previously connected to the air cleaner housing) - via a reducer/adapter (not yet connected in the photos)




The other hose connects the breather outlet on the top of the engine to the oil tank

Whilst working in the engine compartment the clean-up continued over on the lhs including removing/cleaning the relay panel, distributor cap, ignition coil, etc.

A few things came to light:

- date code on the bottom of the coil indicates a manufacturing date of Jan 1970 so maybe it's the original coil ?



- nice to see that the rare - one year only - relay panel plastic cover is present.

The screws are not correct but I'm not prepared to pay the prices asked for original knurled screws - on the rare occasion they're available - so have sourced some similar-looking stainless steel knurled screws (not shown)



- on removing the distributor cap some corrosion was evident in the central (coil) socket which could have led to problems if left untreated



Once everything had been cleaned, a pair of previously-sourced used K&N Watershields were fitted. I have to admit I've never liked the look of the wing nuts so swapped them for some stainless steel flange nuts (which I'll probably disguise with some black domed nut covers)




I also took the opportunity to replace the old air hoses from the engine shroud outlets to the heat exchangers - again I'm not a fan of the original-style paper covered aluminium hoses so replaced them with some generic black aluminium hose which, coincidentally, had the added bonus that they were significantly cheaper

Back up at the front one of the remaining jobs was to fabricate some sort of lightweight bonnet prop/stay.

I looked at Porsche's own offering - as used on the 964 & 993 RS models - plus the aftermarket alternatives from the likes of Rothsport Racing, Seine Systems, etc - as well as what individual owners had come up with ...

In the end I used some 8mm aluminium tube, an M6 male rose joint & some aluminium offcut & came up with this:













- & the total cost ... well under £10 !

DIY rules!
My prop is a length of 1/4" steel tube (B&Q), a plastic cap over the one end and fitted to a small bracket on one of the wing bolts.
Cap end locates into a hole on the leading edge of the fibre glass bonnet.

Tube covered by a long length of heat shrink I had in the garage.

Did all that in 1991 so cost would be 2s 16d! lol

Certainly with you on the nuts for the K&N tops.

Managed to get another couple of jobs ticked off the list ...

First was to replace the (repro) Durant round mirror with a suitably patinated Talbot Berlin 'Green Dot' mirror :




- It had obviously had different mirrors fitted over the years judging by the extra holes discovered (hidden under the Durant's mounting 'gasket') :







Second task was to fit some Porsche side stripe decals - I opted for matt silver:









I can't make up my mind whether I like the look yet - or the alloy wheels come to that - I'll get some better pictures outside somewhere tomorrow (if the weather's better) ...

If I may, wheels are perfect, but the stripes a bit loud for the car.
