While the undertray is off for the tank, I tackled the wobbly accelerator. The bolt heads were rusted to the point an imperial socket fitted better. But despite a lot of New Mexico sand, the floor under the pedal is as it left the factory.Image

It was apparent more than the pedal had play in it.

One thing led to another as it does and before you know it the whole pedal assembly was out. As long as it comes away easily I thought I might as well keep going while the going's good.

But I have one eye on Wednesday's air cooled evening at Caffeine & Machine. Image

The gap between the split pin and the tube is one of the sources of play, with the accelerator linkage sliding from side to side.Image

The clutch cotter pin has a locknut and bolt in its place, well worn. Thankfully the nylon bush has done its job - shown with the bronze replacement in situ.ImageImage

Whoever was in here before did me the kindness of leaving copper slip in the clutch spindle joint. I saw a video on t'internet of a guy having a lot of trouble separating these parts.Image

Everyone felt a lot better after a nice long bath in petrol... followed up by a soapy wash, dry, filing off any high spots, sand and polish to 3,000 grit where warranted.Image

The ball joint that kept popping off seems a lot tighter with a new socket, and I added the tiny locking pin which seems to be an optional component of the joint. Anyway, it seems very reluctant to separate with the pin in place.Image

I've only seen these with a cranked arm and I'm not sure what normally stops the lateral movement, but in this case there's a second bronze bushing between the arm and the correct bushing. It works and I have Caffeine and Machine on Wednesday so it's staying as is.Image

I had the bushing set in anticipation of this job. The clutch and brake bushings were fine, recently replaced in fact, but I had the full set so replaced them all anyway. I only disassembled the clutch and brake spindles in order to get in to clean, de-rust and paint everything.

On the accelerator linkage, I inserted a shim to eliminate the travel. I want the shim to turn with the pin and shaft rather than to wear the pin away, so I added a spot of locking glue to the outside face.Image

Looking good. I assume you’re going to fit a new pin for the clutch pedal rather than the bolt ?

I'm putting it back with a new bolt as I need it on the road today, get it to the petrol station and get some miles on the clock locally to determine it's reliable enough for a 75 minute drive to Caffeine and Machine on Wednesday. A new M6 × 16mm pin is on order for the longer term. I went for a pin and split pin rather than the pin and clip as I'm unsure of the size and fitment, and there's no guarantee the fork is original.

The clutch clevis and pin were changed on mine in '89 and all still there. It is a special pin (maybe hardened, and slides in through the clevis and pivots round where you can then locate the spring catch to the body of the clevis. Might be a factory part as I was buying real Porsche parts back then.
Tempted by C&M on Wednesday, just don't fancy the journey back at night, or rather, the wife doesn't.

you might find the hole for the pin in either the pedal or the shaft has been worn by the bolt .

I've had a full failure of the pin on my 1973 car ( original pin though ), replaced with new genuine pin... and on my 964 I've had a new pin walk out due to elongation of the holes in the shaft & pedal. Replaced both items those now on the 964 so all good

I'm going early - hopefully there before 5:30. Then we can eat there and get away not too late, between eight and half nine say. And if I break down in the old 911 on the return leg it won't be an ungodly hour to get a trailer home. Food is pricey for pizza and chips but it's a rare jaunt for me. As far as I know Impmad2000 has tickets and chris68 is a possible.
