DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

My car's symptoms appear to have developed, it is now not drivable. Missing and backfiring in the drive. I am hoping this is a relatively straight forward fix, Jonny's CDI unit arrived today and the car is getting recovered tomorrow morning and taken to my local independent. He will fit the new box and check the points and hopefully sort the issue. I resigned myself to cleaning the car rather than driving. Still absolutely loving it but really hope this is nothing serious.

When I bought the car I said to my wife that it had been at auction and not sold.....and I managed to pick it up at a good price. She said today on hearing the backfire, that why I got it so cheap, someone wanted rid of it, no wonder it was cheap.

Anyway, for no other reason than to share, I thought I would post some images to give people a feel for the car, I love these kind of images and at times pour over the car pictures in Canepa and CPR Classic Restoration.

Looking at your pictures has the Positive or one of the terminals come away from the coil?

It's a Bosch '006' coil - both of the low tension terminals are next to each other on the underside - ie hidden from view in that shot ....

How ‘hands on’ are you Tom ? . Eg... are you able to check for spark, timing etc etc ?

Turns out the coil was at fault

New coil installed and car running like a dream (so I am told). Looking forward to getting it back and trying it, very keen to see if I will notice a difference with the CDI+. Lovely upgrade to have that I might not have opted for so early on but it is done now. Will report back once I have had a chance to try the car.

I need to thank Jonny at Classic Retrofit, very helpful and went out of his way to ship these on his day off, thanks again.

Mike, thanks.

I asked George Morrison to take the car home a couple of nights ago to test the car, now the coil is on and the new CDI box is fitted. He sent me a text message late that night, it was basically a full page of smiling face emojis and 'Lots of faster cars but this puts a smile on your face'.

For many, many years they were underrated/undervalued by most (?) Porsche enthusiasts &, as a result, probably offered the best value for money of any air-cooled Porsche.

It is incredible how the market changes and opinions of cars alter.

The journey for me with Porsche is relatively recent (10 Years), I have always loved Porsche but in general, cars have always caught my attention. I fondly remember pouring over books with AMG Mercedes, Vector W2 and at that time it was Gemballa Porsche or Ferrari concept cars, all 80's books. I really enjoyed reading road tests and well written accounts of drives. I can get lost in the detail when someone who truly loves cars, Richard Meaden or Henry Catchpole spring to mind.

Apologies for the ramble, few beers tonight.

My motivation to date has always been to try and find the best cars I can, in terms of feel, looks, personal desirability and hope to pass these on to my son. I have a friend who's grandfather left him a 250 GT Lusso and a Pre War Aston, both are gone now. The Aston made record sale, crazy!

The point I am trying to make, the cars I have managed to buy have been a deliberate move/ refinement towards a type all with a view to enjoy and eventually pass onto my son and my daughter. Ben is 17 and needs little encouragement, loves classics. My daughter Eva says I always sell the cars she likes, I think the E (I will eventually complete) will be hers. The purchase of the 2.7 MFI is not so much a wise or financial move, I hope it appreciates (and would hate to see it drop) the car is so much more. I think certain cars define a period / era and this is one of them, my 993 RS is another. There are huge similarities between them and I can see the refinement from the std model to these variants. It is evident having owned the 930 and 3.2 Targa, both of these offer so much but the difference to the 2.7 Carrera is significant. It is the same with the 993 models, my first was a C2S then the 993 Turbo, both of these were incredible cars but neither of them connected like the RS. It is a cliche, but both the Carrera 2.7 MFI and the 993 RS are more than the sum of their parts.

The aim is to lavish as much care and attention onto the car as is possible and drive it every opportunity I can...it is definitely touring the North Coast of Scotland this year on the annual boys weekend, and hopefully, it becomes part of the family long term. If my son and daughter share the passion I have, then they will have some lovely cars to choose from. It might sound a bit of a strange motivation but I like the idea of these being there for them....they might also drive them and think what the hell was dad thinking, these are shocking, sell it!

Anyway, that pretty much where I am the moment.

I have several cars, and the family would probably not object if they moved on to make way for others ... except the 356, which is loved by all (they all drive it). Unlike more powerful machines, you can have an enjoyable 356 blast on any road, on any day.



I too see it as an automotive heirloom, and so do they I’m sure. I dread to think of the squabbles over who gets to keep it close to them when I’m gone (after a suitably respectful period of mourning of course).

But what I ponder ever increasingly is what sort of motoring world will it be encountering? Will combustion engines even be allowed on the roads? Will my kids be trailering it to ‘permitted events’ with a short blast around a controlled circuit? Will this huge burgeoning Classics industry, with increasing numbers of jobs created (Bicester ffs) be regulated out of existence?

Not mine to solve. Theirs to negotiate, alongside all the other things coming their way.

Driverless electric cars. That’s what our grandchildren will be used to. They will have but a distant memory of the internal combustion engine.

My grandfather learnt to drive in a steam lorry at 17 years of age Tom.

Mike, fingers crossed it never gets to this.

Something else I think should remain is the humble key, seriously not a fan of the keyless ignition.
