I've every intention of doing as much as I can .The rest of the body and panel work along with paint will all be DIY at home and I shall tackle most of the mechanical and electrical stuff and also the interior trim

The only parts I'm not comfortable with are

*screen fitting (this being the reason the car has some rot...the screens both leaked)
*engine rebuilding (but only because if I cock up its a bloody expensive thing to replace)
*gearbox (too many cogs,washers ,and bits inside lol)

Otherwise I shall be tackling everything else so might need the odd bit of advice !!

I would be interested to know what you lot think about engines,boxes and screens (ie home build or pro?)

Is it a good idea to uprate this engine whilst in bits or should I keep standard?

I've never heard the engine run but the PO assured me it ran well although a bit smokey ,,,,he's passed away since so I can't ask if the smoke was just start up or if it ran smoky but I suspect it leaks oil as it was scruffy

I know that I probably can't cure the leaks without dismantling and then of course it's into rebuild territory........is it possible to bench test ? Anyone done this ?

Once home I had to start welding up the missing bits between the "hump" panel that Chesterton had fitted and my original floors ,, welding not as neat as theirs , but it's lovely and solid there now

screen fitting - I have used "ultimate windscreens" for the last few I've had done and he's AWESOME! hes based in Daventry though so not sure if he travels as far out as Lincoln.. if he does, I literally can't speak highly enough of him

Dents etc painstakingly beaten out of the floorpan and a quick skim too .......why do those people jack the car on the floorpan ? Aaasgggghhhhh

I don't know how I would have managed without this rotisserie, , I've not had one before and I know it's no good if your bodyshell isn't structurally sound but it's saved my back and saved me hours of work .......

Georg Kompecher, a Swiss friend young in age but experienced in the Porsche world said to me once:
"Of the 20 porsche specialists in Switzerland, only 2 weren't done for bad workmanship or tax evasion".

That could very well be true, to some extend, for other countries.

Many years ago I described on here somewhere some characters I met all over the continent and here in the UK. Boy oh boy....

But, more to the point: I highly admire your workmanship, and it looks a great adventure that can only become sweeter by the day!

Please keep posting: it is great to follow a resurrection. By the way, Brendan of this parish pushes buttons on computers for a living, and he managed to save deleted pictures off a harddrive failure I experienced. If you have lost tons of pictures, and you still have the harddrive, all might not be lost.

I wish I did have the hard drive but I don't ! ..I took some pics on my old phone ,some on the new phone ,some with my tablet and the remainder on my camera

Luckily I did as I've got some pics ,but not necessarily the ones I'd like to show . I've even been through old emails to reclaim pics

At least you guys are getting the idea of what I'm trying to achieve ,,just wish my welding was better but you only get that with practice and apart from my mga I've not restored anything other than barns in ten or more years so I'm just finding my feet again

Hopefully you're not all cringing about what I'm doing to this 911T !!

I've done a few 4 and 2 wheel projects.
I keep a camera card specific to each. Project, load for forums etc but keep the car steadily growing until all is done.
And PC disasters and those pics at least are safe.

Gearbox? Send it to Mike Bainbridge.
Engine? DIY is certainly doable, just read Gary71 engine build, his is a T.
Having had a 2.2 T some years ago, that 110 bhp engine is surprisingly nice I felt.

Lovely Gaps

Another shout out for Chestertons..... They have just completed the rebuild of my shell, there work is first class and as you say they are just normal guys. Over the last 6 months John and Roy have shared a few horror stories around bodged shells that they have been asked to resurrect..... It's more common than you think, there seems to be a lot of Cowboys out there who claim they have the skills to resurrect these old cars ......
