The last few days have been all about filling and paint prep. Given this was meant to be a quick lash up just to see if it would go through an MoT, things are getting a bit out of hand.

Most of the car is currently in primer, and the scuttle and N/S doorshut / door back are in top coat.

Need to finish the prep on the bumpers and rear valance/number plate panel, and get these primed.

I'd hope that by the end of today both sides of the car will be in paint, and that all of the paint will be on by the end of play tomorrow.

As I'm typing this, I've realised that it looks as though I've painted my fingernails Guards Red

.

Hopefully get some pictures up tomorrow or over the weekend

Here you go: both front wings are hanging one bolt fowards at the moment, just for access, and to get them out of the way a bit.

Like I say, the scuttle's painted, the primer that you can see here went on monday evening, and has had a black guide-coat applied. When this has all gone, and any low spots highlighted by the guide coat dealt with, the rest of the colour can go on

BTW, I've only primed where there's filler on the front wings, enginelid and bonnet. The rest of the car will be fully primed, as it's either gone back to bare metal, or had paint that was not good enough as a substrate.

The silly thing is that this paint might well only be on there for fourteen months or so, and then the car may well be back down as a shell, to have it's 'proper' resto.

The paint going on looks a lot more vermillion than the stuff that's on there at the moment (it's a much nicer colour, and a bit more 'period' as it happens). I'm planning to blend it out up the pillars, and hopefully it'll be good enough for now. I don't want to paint the roof, as my workshop isn't a good enough environment, plus I don't really want to get involved with stripping out the sunroof this time.

Everything is now primed: later I'll flat off the wings, doors and engine lid (1st batch of primer), and hopefully get some final topcoat on those bits tonight.

Two more batches after that: bumpers and valence, and finally the bonnet.

This is the trouble with only having a small workshop to work in: if I was working in a full-sized booth, I'd be able to work in much bigger batches, and probably do the whole lot in two hits.

Finished the painting today: was as good as my word, and did a batch around midnight (after the Fairmile), another before Vintage-ing, and the final one tonight (just got in).

It's all had three coats now, and I've taken the opportunity to include an interesting selection of wildlife and workshop debris in order to bulk up the finish

. The joys of trying to spray in a standard garage ...

Anyway, there's a few ripples and bits that aren't great, but it'll look fine on a wet night ....

BTW, sorry the photo's not very good, and it does flatter to deceive.

Easy day tomorrow, with just a load of cleaning up of parts, and possibly start work on a quick tidy for the interior

. The only other thing I need to do is flat off the pillars, and blend the two very different Guards reds in. I would have done it tonight, but the laquer was in the attic, which I'd sealed off (doh). Bit of a shame, but will probably still work out O.K.

I'll let the paint harden for a day or so, and then hit it with some 1500 grit (wet) and then the polisher, and hopefully reduce some of mountain ranges I've built into it ....

Well done Barry - it's amazing what can be achieved in such a short timescale when you get the bit between your teeth.

Really looking forward to seeing this in the flesh - just hope it's not raining that day
