As Jon and Andy also highlighted it's alloy castings for the early Magnetti Marelli twin spark distributor which were used on 2.0 and 2.2 engine cases.

I hadn't realised that the twin park distributor I'd purchased from Ben Coles was for later cases, typically for RSR etc.....it could have been machined/adapted to fit but better to have the correct type.

Wilfrid kindly highlighted the differences between the various MM dizzies and when I mentioned this to Ben he said he'd produce the early type and add these to his product range as well.....

...so easy I guess when you know how and all done within a few weeks......producing the 60 odd separate parts that go inside the dizzy might take a little time though!

Real clever stuff. I'll show the finished article in a couple of weeks.

How are they dealing with the shrinkage? Are the molds scaled up or taken directly from the original?

I would imagine the pattern maker has allowed more than enough meat for the critical dimensions to be machined after casting. The work that pattern guys do is amazing quite often working from "positive" drawings or measurements to create a "negative".

No idea Jonny but they seem to turn out the right size

Some things you appreciate more when looking back….

…..that's certainly true of the first gearbox Mike Bainbridge built for me. Not only are MB Porsche Engineering amongst the cream of the UK's Porsche specialists, Mike doesn't apply the 'Porsche premium' often encountered elsewhere!

At the time I acknowledged how fair Mike had been, a fantastic gearbox rebuild whilst supplying and fitting a ZF LSD. A great deal indeed..……...in hindsight it ranks as the best value I spent on my 2.4E restoration…..I paid peanuts!

Alas not so lucky this time around…...not that Mike's philosophy has changed, his labour rate is still as keen as ever however this gearbox needs a little more work. At least having to replace a couple of gear sets helped justify going for custom ratios….not that I needed much persuasion!

The package I sent up to Mike today included my machined end case with pump pushes pressed and RS oil pump gears honed, these work in conjunction with the oil spray bar and aid cooling, the middle set of gears from Guard Transmissions and a Wevo transmission side cover and bearing retainer plate. The Wevo products are really post-78 cheats however the side cover is stronger and accepts the larger 930 bearing whilst the teddy bear is a sensible upgrade….not quite period mods but then they could have been done 'in the day' so that'll work for me…….



…so, with my gearbox build all in hand, engine build to commence shortly, wheels confirmed as nearly done, a couple of specialist parts in the process of being fabricated, assembly scheduled for December and with my bodyshop staffing problem now resolved……

…..it looks like the next few months could be a lot of fun!

Just finished reading through all 40 pages of this. What an awesome project

Back in the days when the plan was for the Mongrel to be a budget hot rod I had the idea of fitting Minilite rear wheels…..an ST look but on a skinny shell.

Alas, the wheel didn't exist and there's no reason why they should…….I explored the possibility of having such a wheel produced however by this time my head had been turned and for that I'm extremely grateful.

When I first contacted Harvey Weidman and asked if he could help with a set of deep 6's and 7R's by the time of CLM 2014, he was thankful that my 12 month timeframe was realistic as most people wanted his wheels tomorrow!…..

….well that was nearly two years ago and we're very, very nearly there…...but it looks like it'll be worth the wait …..

…and, like factory, Harvey suggested detailing the rears as well (one of those 'I know it's there details!)….



….rears transformed to 7R to accommodate some wide rubber….



…...I'm told the finish of Mr W's wheels is second to none…



….now some might think, just like narrow Minilite's on a skinny shell, that deep 6's and 7R's on a 72, let alone with an RSR finish, is just plain wrong!……. and they'd certainly have a point! ….

…….but at the end of the day, at least this car will have heart(s)!…
