The 914 made two new friends today...

Beautiful day today so took the opportunity to exercise the aircooled cars

Got my IDA float gauge from Larry Turner in the US and started checking my levels, all fine until the last one, which was way too high, a bent tab on the float being the culprit. Car now running like a dream, bags more lift from low down.

Lockdown trip, took our boy to the vets, his first ride in it. He was very unsure at first but settled into it....

Then suffered my first bit of Porsche hate from a woman in a people carrier who gave me the Vs for giving loads of space to a couple of runners. Which was nice

Drove out to Farnborough in Warwickshire for a Walk.

On the way stopped at Halfords and replaced the bulbs which aren't working in the temp fuel gauge.

The handling of this car is made for B Roads.

When I got back I decided to check the dwell. It was 60. Then is spend 30/60 mins learning that setting the points in this distributor isnt as easy as a 022. In the end I had to swap in some new points that Andrew had included because I wouldn't get a good angle on the old points. Looks like the rubber stub which sits on the shaft was worn.

Next I thought I would check the timing. Kevin Clark had told me I might be able to move the engine by hand on the fan. No chance. I jacked up the car and got an assistant to turn the wheel but couldn't find the marking. Guessed twice and still no luck. Timing light was working very well but not sure why I couldn't find them. I was turning to tdc on 1 then looking for the marks. When I couldn't find them I had my ass turn the wheel slowly while looking at the fan? Another day.

Adjusted the gear shifting and took for a drive. More responsive and shifting better. However, I think there is still more to come from the engine.

Trial fitted new seat (Cobra RSR) – narrow enough to allow handbrake access (many aftermarket seats are too wide), fouls backpad, but seat is in exactly the right place for me so undecided whether to remove backpad and replace with carpet, or not. Another plus is that the RSR is a very shallow seat, about the same depth as the original, so no problems there, either. Narrower than stock runners, so waiting for some aluminium plate to arrive to make adaptor. Happy bunny!

The back pad doesn’t add much sound insulation, but every little helps I guess.
Doesn’t look too bad against the back pad from your photo though?

Good clearance on the handbrake.
I have the 914GT seats from BFTorino, and the handbrake is accessible but much tighter with those.

I feel for your passenger if you take them for a spirited drive on twisties!

Thanks - I've already pretty much decided to remove backpad. I've got (pseudo) Dynamat on the firewall already, which probably does more than the factory pad anyway. May add another layer of that under the carpet, only because I often use the car for 500-mile round trips. Really impressed with the Cobra RSR seats - very well made and a good sturdy frame. Sarah sat in it and preferred it to the stock 'bouncy, bouncy' seat, so a can see another one heading this way soon – or maybe something like the Cobra RS which is a little more practical for getting in and out of the car as it doesn't have deep side bolsters. It will also match the driver's seat better.

I vowed when I bought this car that I wouldn't start going down the route of making it a little more 'hardcore'. Guess I failed on that objective...
