Nicer morning than me!

Delved into my longest running un-resolved issue with my 987.2 Boxster.
If anyone has an issue with white smoke start-up on these modern kettle engines, run for the hills.

Now on my 4th AOS, cold start smoke has returned after a few months of absence.
Oil in the AOS vent tube to the inlet just up from the throttle body has been my morning.
Cleaned the tube of oil, got as much out of the AOS outlet as I can, back together and runs well.

Will this ever end? Nobody has an answer, least of all me.

Got a Check Coolant Level light on too, yippee, added a litre of fluid, still not full.
More trouble, DIY, expense ahead.
Someone will get a great car when I sell.

Wife wants it gone and no replacement.

Check the water pump and the coolent pipes front and rear !

Did that yesterday..
Cannot find a leak or at least nothing visible from outside the car. Need to look much harder. Checked the pump area and it is all bone dry, I suspect it will be the 'brilliantly engineered' cross pipes or radiators. Boxsters are great as a design, poorly engineered.

Got a related(?) fright today. Went for a run, about 30 miles locally and parked up with the water temp ay 80C as per normal, it has never moved from this temp ever.

2 hours later , started it to come home and the dash said check engine coolant and the gauge showed over 120C.
So, the car had stood still for 2 hours and the temperature had risen to 120+ with the engine off.

Must be a sender.
Drove it for 1/2 mile and the temp dropped to 80 and the dash message went. 1/2 mile of driving later it happened again, went from 80 to 120+ in about 3 seconds, then went back to 80 a few mins later.
Sat at 80C all the way home.

Beware of water cooled Porsches.

As you say could be water pipes front or rear hard to see unless you can get on a lift and see tell tale pink stains!

I'll get shot talking Boxster too much!
Found a small puddle of coolant under the floor, right by the cross over tubes off wet on the under trays.
Stripping the covers off tomorrow, pipes or rad or indeed both?

Took the Boxster on a mini staycation and went the long way up the Gospel pass.

Very unusually for me I got lucky today.

Got the nose of the 987.2 in the air and found the source of the leaking coolant.
Bottom left hose, everywhere else bone dry.
With a bit of 'slowly-catch-your-monkey' teased the hose off the bottom plastic T connection and the other end slipped out a dream from the radiator.
Somewhat surprised, and having caught 2 litres of coolant in old oil catch trays I scooted off to the OPC who happened to have the hose in stock (!) infact, he had ALL the front hoses in stock which indicates the 'popularity' of this fault!
£30 later back home with a similar cost of coolant in hand and it all popped back together.


Opened the engine up (again...) and opened the Burp Valve and poured in about 4 litres of neat OAT coolant topping the engine tank. Started the engine (no smoke, no coolant message) and warmed it up and up and up..and then all the hoses to the rads were hot, fans on, heater to fully hot so the system should be wide open to flow and air pockets dispersed.
New hose ok, everywhere else ok that I could see, so will test the car tomorrow and hopefully rejoice next week if the coolant level in the boot is steady at Full. I have just over filled it above the yellow MAX marker so I can actually see it!
So, 90% sure I've fixed the leak for £65, learnt a bit and feel better.

Soon will try my mod to the AOS/Vent tube.

ps, wish my wife looked that happy in my Boxster!

Been messing around in the garage and doing a few little jobs on the cars this evening

Completed 940 miles on the rebuilt engine and gearbox in two months in the 2.2 S. Took the car to GDC for its first post rebuild service.

Today I took my GT3 to brands hatch for an evening track day what a disaster. The same car that got on at oulton with a 98 limit scored 103 at 6k. Even at 4.5k it was 102.2. how can that be?

On the very grumpy journey home i realised I had two Porsches. So I hurried home, transferred the stuff into the 69t and went back.

I had an absolute blast! I had no idea how nicely balanced it was and so easy to feel what was going on. Sadly on the way home I lost 4th and 5th. By the time I was home the gear selection was more like stirring porridge with not much in the way of gears available.

Might be the box or might be the gear change linkage, we'll see. But who needs a GT3?
