SO close!

The 'turning it over excitement' I can relate to when I put a VR6 in my old Golf, just the sound of the starter pushing 6 cylinders round rather than four was a revelation! :)

Nige wrote:but why you warming the oil?

Not really sure Nige, but it felt right.

It was quite cold in the evening and I thought it would flow abit easier into the tank, and just aid flow around the stone cold engine. It wasn't hot, just the chill taken off.

Well if it felt warm and wet it must have been right!

jury wrote:So after afew months of head scratching I think I have finally solved the problem of attaching the '70 911 Gearbox to the original '68 Stub axles. The rumour was that using 914 parts would be the answer. Andy (Lightweight_911) had kindly supplied me with some 914 Output shafts, and I picked up some 914 C.V's and Driveshafts on Germany Ebay. The 914 Driveshafts are 47,0cm long, the magic number I needed was 41.5cm , so after considering having the 914 shafts shortened ( don't really know how this would be done without he things snapping when in use ) I looked again at the original Driveshafts that came with the car.........41.5cm!!! and these have the same splines as the 914 C.V joint !!! Can it really be that straight forward

So long story short....I believe that this is finally the correct combination:

All the C.V's are currently in a friends Ultrasonic Cleaning Bath, so I can check the condition. HOWEVER, I do need another 901 driveshaft if anyone has one lying around....the other Shaft that was fitted looks like it came from something else.

I believe that this is the original, and what I need:
- 41.5cm Length
- 27.0MM Across Splines
- 33 Splines

Great project!
Did the above combination work in the end? I have a 70/71 gearbox and engine combo that I kept from a previous project, and which is now going in a 1968 912. So 914 inner flanges and 914 inner CVs is all I need? Any other hick ups? Clutch cable etc. will be all 70/71 I suppose?

Thanks :)

I haven't driven the car yet so it could all go wrong....but it is all bolted together ok and fits

914 flanges fit the gearbox and also fit the 901 Ball Bearings and races if needed. The only thing that is different from the original post is that the driveshafts are 25 spline, not 33. Clutch cable is 70/71, all fits ok but is not adjusted yet.

Right then, after afew set backs of a faulty Oil pressure sender and sticking Carb floats, yesterday was eventually the day that we tried to start the car in earnest...and after a week of glorious sunshine, it was quite fitting that it would be pouring down for this Baptism.

So attempt 1:

A few points to clarify...Mrs Jury had been warned that it might BANG and POP abit but should just keep filming whatever happens. Secondly she states that I have been working on this for 8 years...its ''ONLY'' been 6 !!!

So attempt 2:

Actually it was about attempt 7, and Mrs Jury had been replaced by a Wheelie bin and Gaffer tape...love her to bits really

Well we got some impressive smokes rings but that was about it. We tested all the Spark plugs and we were getting really good sparks. We had Fuel going in and Air.....Then I started reading about static timing, I have a feeling that hand cranking the engine has moved the TDC which has thrown out of sync the firing order...

Could this be the issue ?

On a positive, the Oil pressure was great :)

Onwards!

Chris

So nearly there...Hand cranking won't change any static setting..Double check firing order, do you have the ignition timing set ? A simple check is points on the cusp of opening as the rotor tip just approaches no 1 electrode. If thats right don't be scared to rotate the dizzy by hand about this point as you crank it. The motor may appear to "lock" if you get it too far advance (counter clock), just retard it if that happens. It may fire up in which case turn the dizzy to get the best high idle then retard (clockwise) a touch from there before getting a light on it. Also remember if its all new it probably won't idle too well so set that a bit high as you stabilise it. Also new rings need bedding they don't like static revs or too much idling at first.

Good luck

Timing - check you have the plug leads in the right sequence... Have had similar results with a VW distributor being 180 degrees out.

Nearly there Chris !

I wouldn't turn the engine over continuously for that length of time (in one burst) though - you'll run the risk of burning out your starter motor ...

Thanks guys, that is this afternoon sorted. Checked the leads twice yesterday, they are in the right order. So onto the Dizzy :)

Totally agree Andy, didn't actually realise it was that long until I watched it back on the video.....I think we got carried away

Wife replaced by wheelie bin and gaffer tape....priceless.....

Won't be long now. We'll both be there at Le Mans and laughing about all these irritating little bits and pieces.

Maybe give the Sage of the Lakes a call for advice?
