I had my gauges restored by Julian Reap but it was only a cosmetic overhaul since the innards were working fine. Since I got the car back, driving around I had noticed that my speedo was fluttering around 20-30mph despite using a new speedo cable. I sent the gauge to Hans Peters to restore and the gauge works perfectly now. Send Hans an email so he can send you his postal address and will know to expect the gauge. He workmanship is excellent but it may take a while to get the gauge back...

thanks Gitesh, that is my plan. I hear good things about Hans Peters.

I did speak to him earlier and have sent him an email. He is reckoning on 4 weeks before he gets to look at it! He didnt give me his address in the phone call so i was hoping to speed the process up by a day if anyone else had an address.

I found a post on another website that gave an address but that was in 2007 so i dont know if it is still current.

Washed the car and took it out for a drive only to get down the road and the alternator light comes on!

I had the alternator checked about 6 months ago when the light intermittently came on and it checked out fine and as the fault went away I did nothing more.

What's the next thing to check - the voltage regulator?

Check your connection of the big battery cable to the starter motor is tight. Mine was loose and gave same symptoms, bought new regulator and got alternator checked before I found it !!

Ben Lewis finished the floor/bulkhead repair on my 914 today. Here's a before and after...

Before, with damaged floor from an off-road 'excursion' at some point in the car's life, plus rusted inner and outer bulkhead on passenger side:


After, with new part floor panel and new bulkhead lower panels made by Ben from scratch:


Hopefully collect car tomorrow night and then in with the new Lakewell carpets, on with the new Vintage Speed exhaust and then swap the wheels

Yes, Ben is meticulous. The rust was strange, in that it was very localised – I think that in its early life, in either Illinois or Wisconsin, it must have been parked regularly on a slope, allowing any water that got in (part and parcel of 914 ownership...) to puddle in the corner behind the passenger seat. The rest of the floor was fine, apart from under the pedals, which was a separate issue.
