This RS had a few notable advantages over say, Nigel’s RS, recently ‘sold’ on the same site. Not least the colour which seems to be a favourite with German ‘investors’. GP white over red in lhd has, I think, a premium if the history and condition of the car is top notch which this one seemed to be. Also, there are not many ‘unrestored’ 73RS’s out there which I think also added a premium. I was expecting £500k but there were two or three bidders at the death who seemed to really all want it. The last few minutes was indeed interesting to watch.

Mike

Good to hear from you Mike and hope you’re keeping well and safe. Thought we might have had a wee comparison sold story if rumours are correct?

Yes, I sold the RS in the summer during lockdown. I had 17 years of glorious ownership and I felt I had arrived at a point in life where other things began to matter more. It’s amazing what a few quiet weeks of clear thinking did back in March/April. James helped me fulfill the dream trip back to Sicily which exceeded my expectations and then some. I felt I couldn’t top that trip and the full history of the car was thus completed especially meeting Armando Floridia, the guy who sold it new in Palermo. It was a great thrill for me to meet him and just to drive the car on some of the roads it must have covered when new. The camaraderie of the guys on that trip was true DDK spirit, memories I’ll treasure forever.

I just felt it was time. I was just thrilled to have had such a special relationship with a car that adorned my bedroom wall as a teenager and to meet the friends of DDK along the way. It wouldn’t have been the same experience without DDK I can assure you.

I’ll never be without an early 911 though and I dream about a return trip to Sicily in the 67S.

The RS has gone to the USA to be turned, no doubt, into a chartreuse showroom special which feels against how I tried to preserve the integrity of the car but hey ho, nothing lasts forever. Bitter/sweet decision but I’m cool about it.

Tough choice, superb car, sad to see it leave the DDK family.

Sicily is still within reach ;-)

Funnily enough I was just thinking of you and the RS the other day as I drove through Ayrshire. Bittersweet, but better to have loved and sold than never to have loved at all (or words to that effect!). At least there are others in the garage.

Mike, fantastic car and owner. We are only custodians. I’ve never regretted selling any of my cars when the time was right. I’m actually going through same process and expect to offload a few hopefully but we’ll see. Process is always easier when seamless so congrats and I’m sure a new purchas3 will be along soon.

Thanks Will,

It was a perfect way to round things off thanks. Can’t imagine the next chapter will be as exciting but you never know. Hope next year and beyond we can meet up again somewhere on our travels. All the best.

Mike

Hi Mike,

A bit sad to see you have let your wonderful RS go, but as you say, you have had your fun with her. Im sure the new owner will treasure her.

I will never forget when you let me have a drive of her in Le Mans, its what dreams are made of, magic!!

Kind Regards

These were great trips for me too. Thanks guys. Great memories.
I think you and Brendan were the only ones to have a drive John.

Gary, that is still one of my favourite shots of the car, ever. And being driven as intended.

Mike
