Fascinating these cars all seem to rot in slightly different places over time for a given age.

Not my best work I’ll admit, but will be OK once under some lead/underseal!

Today’s job was the RH battery box. I removed a big old repair that had been put over the hole without cutting it out.

New flanges on to start with, then a bit of CAD, and into the metal.

I collected my panels from Envirostrip yesterday with a mixed outcome!

RH front wing: Mint. Just paint it and put it back on. Really that good

LH front wing: Scrap. I knew it had issues and it’s probably repairable (I even have some donor bits already) but in the time v cost v result equation I’ll be buying a new one. Shiny in places but let’s add it to the pile:


Front spoiler: Needs work. Quite a lot.
But as they are NLA and valuable it will be recovered!


Engine lid: Mixed. Outer skin good, needs one repair. Inner skin not so good.
Probably going to repair it.

Lid is about as bad as mine was, holes will be nice and big!
Very thin steel used, about 0.8 and tricky to weld.

Totally doable and save £600 on new.

Bought my front wings fron Euro Parts on one of their deal days, both for £800.

That's a good price for the wings! Currently £782 for one...

And the door isn’t going back on either!

Skin is like the surface of the moon and it looks like an SC door that was reskinned by Ray Charles with an axe.

This explains why it was so heavy! Mainly filler. Not rusty really, just not very straight.

So currently on the look out for a RH 964 door. As if I’m going non original I may as well go galvanised and impact bar

Try to find an SC or early 3.2 door if you can Gary, 964 door has quite a lot of differences you will need to backdate.

Trouble is they are just as likely to be as rough as the one I have if not worse. The other door is a 964 so at least they’d match

Once I get it in the garage for a proper look I may chose to reskin it. But that might be a bit beyond my metalwork skills.

My indoor parts collection is growing.

I’ve started on the spoiler today. Lots of dents, damage around pretty much every fixing. Bodge repair on the mounting bracket (not mine!). A few patches later it’s coming together but I’m under no illusion about the work that’s going to be needed to get it good enough for paint.

Both surfaces where the main mounting brackets attach need replacing. One snapped stud and one loose weld nut on one side. Rusted out on the other!

I re skinned both of my doors after making new bottom panels.
I used the then new Dansk skins which were awful to fit due to the bow in the top edge where the glass scraper blade fits.
I wish I hadn't used them...

Exactly why I’m probably not re-skinning.

I’ve found a 964 door for £300. But it’s not exactly local.

Bored with this spoiler now. Just grabbing the odd hour here and there as work is so busy. New top corner went on tonight together with a little patch around a fixing.



I’ve spent a while panel beating the lower edge straight, looks good now. Guess I drive into stuff a lot...

Once I’ve done the same corner on the other side it’s done and I can get back to the shell!

Plenty of surface prep needed on the other side, but that will stay bare until dry fitted with all the panels at some point in the distant future...
