Got my Porsche (128) out to do a bit of annual maintenance - some of the mountings needed greasing

and the shovel handle


Started it up - realised i have to fill the front axle with oil given the racket!! Working my way round derusting the bits that were attacked by salt spray on the ferry back from normandy last year...



All in all though, not bad nick for a 76 year old.....

yep, took it on a river in Normandy near Carentan last year.

And what you cant see from the above is that i was being towed out. I got in ok, sailed around for a bit using the wheels for propulsion (wide and deep tread ok for going with the current). Then needed to start the prop which you do by stopping the engine, pushing the prop onto a dog clutch driven off the crank (in the first photo above, you can see the rod which you use to lower the prop onto the clutch), restart and away you go. However, my 'prop man' failed to engage the prop drive 3 times and then because i had a charging issue, it wouldnt start on the 4th attempt.



But as you can see, she floats with 4 adults aboard although at this point, i wasnt talking to my prop guy (leather jacket) holding him responsible for the mission failure. I may or may not already have sworn at him profusely at this point but he is Canadian so he is used to it.

On return to UK, had the generator rewound and then during the check over, discovered my problem was actually a solder connection in the regulator had cracked apart.....

All schwimms leak to a greater or lesser extent so there are a number of drain plugs in the bottom. The cars were designed for crossing rivers rather than tooling about for an hour on the water so if you are afloat for any length of time, it gets quite damp inside! Some people fit bilge pumps but then you have to convert to 12v as there are no 6v pumps available apparently.

They are good fun though!

Always fancied a 166 and know a few people who own them but then I drove one on road (in Sacramento – don't they think they were ever expected to invade there!) and decided that I preferred cars a) which didn't deafen you with transmission noise and b) went at least vaguely in the direction in which you wished to progress. . I was told they are better in off-road situations rather than tarmac and modern traffic.

My friend Loren Pearson in SoCal put his freshly-restored one in the dragboat lake at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix, which looked hilarious alongside the 700bhp ski-boats. He tucked it away for winter and when he dug it out a few months later, there was a pool of oil underneath – the chemicals in the dragboat lake had eaten through the transmission casing!

If you know anyone who's after a near-perfect example, another friend has one available in Oregon.

one's enough for me - and yes, driving on the road is an interesting experience. loud transmission noise, cable brakes which are capable of locking the wheels and as a result you skate across junctions due to the off road rather than tarmac tyres (ask me how i know) and when it rains, dont bother putting the hood up. Oh and the high level exhaust gases rear passengers when you have the hood up.

But off road.....performance is unbelievable....

But just to prove jeeps can go places as well, my Jeep and Schwimm down at our ponds....

Washed the general grime of being static in the garage off the 911 today, that was 8 months of dust and more.
Shining, took the car through the estate for a 1/2 mile brake drying and 15 gear changes.
Everything working and fine.
Left the car to tick over to running temp to get the batteries charged.

Sure is an analogue car!
First time in my 30 years with the car it has sat dormant this long.

Did yet more detailing to the silent Boxster.

Snowfoamed, Washed, Machine Polished then a coat of Zymol Concourse Wax

Who said white cars don't shine!

Thought I'd do a bit on the old 73T hot rod today in the sun.

Bought a full carpet set in 1989 from Don Trimming via the printed Exchange & Mart I think for £20. Coarse black, un pliable but bound in real plastic, a classy set to say the least.
It went in but the 3 piece front set came out when I started hill climbing 18 months later.

Oddly, I rolled it up and it went into the loft until 2 days ago.
In my pursuit to civilise the car, I re-installed the carpets, the old creases where it sort of conformed to the irregular boot of the 911 still there.
Bit of repair work to old Stanley blade slips from 89 and it is all in.
Used Velcro to fix the side panels, worked a treat.

Need to focus on the steering wheel now, but might simply leave it alone and clean the suspension.

Drove it...

I did the Tesco click & collect essenial travel for survival goods in the 356......It felt strangely naughty.....and was fun, the lads at Tesco loved it too, cheered them up.....didn't get done or break down either! W
