Nice day out! :)

With the help of a local auto electrician, we fixed the dashboard lights and headlights on my 356. Just needs the tappets adjusting, oil changing and new drive shaft boots and it’s A1.

One annoying fault it has is ticking over too fast in hot weather after a fast run. Normally it’s sits all day at about 700rpm but if the weather is very hot or it has climbed a long hill, it ticks over at 1500rpm and slowly drops back to 700 rpm. Anyone have any ideas.

I’ve carefully set the ignition timing of a 123 electronic distributor, the carbs have been stripped, ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt, the float levels and the accelerator pumps have been set and I’ve had the manifolds off to make sure there are no air leaks. Balancing was done with a vacuum gauge and it’s starts immediately hot or cold. Needle jets are new.

AshleyJames, any chance that when hot, an air leak is being created? Imagine you've already made sure accelerator cable isn't too tight? Best of luck, John

Good question. Removing the inlet manifolds is a fun job.

When the engine's hot and the tick-over is high, try spraying some WD40 around the base of the manifolds – if there is an air leak, the WD40 temporarily seals the leak and the engine note will change.

Ashley,

In over 50 years of driving mine a super version I aim for 900 rpm idle. Weather can influence this. The bell cranks with the ball ends should be really quite loose to turn when the engine is on idle. If you grease these heavily the grease can have an effect of not allowing them to drop down exactly on the stop. It might be wrong but I use a very thin application.

In more than 50 years of car ownership I have never polished a car. Cursory washing using Fairly Liquid was about it. Today I had the interior and exterior of my 1970 S professionally cleaned. Expected the exterior to come up well as it is a repaint (bright trim untouched original) but the interior is largely original (and never cleaned in almost 7 years) including the carpets so expectations of a positive result were not high. The detailer was very gentle with the carpet cleaning and overall produced a great result. ImageImage

.

The car looks lovely Kirk - we need more pictures though (when weather allows).

Glad to hear I'm not alone in never having polished any of my cars ...

I’ve rebuilt it all , made sure it’s very free and carefully lubricated it. Once it settles I cam get a reliable tickover so low that the needle doesn’t move.

One thought I did have was that I’m running a 356 advance curve with a 912 camshaft. More advance at just above 1000 rpm might cause it.

Thank you Andy for your kind comments. Perhaps the "no polish fraternity" are all of a "certain age"?
