More trial ftting today:

1. Parcel shelf threaded harness mounts, sourced from Dirk Schäfer 3 years ago:

"Left suspension for seat belt", p/n 901.501.709.20

"Right suspension for seat belt", p/n 901.501.710.20

Before we started we were able to examine the way the same plates had been installed in a Chartreuse 1st series 2.7 RS Touring next door at Sporting & Historic as a guide:

To cut the hole in the parcel shelf in the correct location, we made a paper template of the plate and marked the outline of the upper part on it. Once this was done we tacked the whole plate into place on the underside:

2. Race number roundel (aka 'meatball') illumination lamps:

These were fitted to the passenger side of the car for Le Mans 24 hours for identifying the car to the signalling pits at the right-hand Mulsanne Corner (none required on the driver's side).

Hella K2821/1 NOS licence plate illumination lamps (fitting instructions stamped 16/08/1971) sourced from Enoz - as also fitted to the 1970 Le Mans-winning Porsche 917-023 on the rear deck:

This excellent photo of 0955 in the paddock after qualifying on the Wednesday provides a good indication as to where they were positioned:

We drew the outline of the meatballs on the door skin and rear quarter as best we could and also located the door frame in door shell to assist with setting out and then drilled the holes...

These lamps will ultimately be wired into the fog lamp switch using a custom Kroon harness so we can turn them on and off independently of the headlights (probably not legal on the highway anyway...)

3. Installing front oil coolers and braided crossover lines:

The twin front Behr oil coolers have been one of the biggest challenges with this project, given the ongoing quest for maximum authenticity.

Reference period photos of the luggage compartments for the 18 customer racing S-Rs - 3 more S-Rs were converted to rally spec, these being 0495, 0550 and 1019 - have been extremely difficult to find however this picture of the werks 1972 Monte Carlo rally car 911 230 0041 confirms the factory did use zinc-coated, stainless steel, 32mm diameter, braided oil lines with a consensus opinion suggesting no tracer, as opposed to the hard crossover lines fitted in the 1970-71 2.3 STs:

The serial '72 S hard oil lines running below the passenger door sill (rocker) were omitted due to the high risk of damage on rallies so the flexible braided oil lines were also run inside the car and through the bulkhead into the luggage compartment instead:

No such issues with the racing S-Rs, however, which utilised the serial S hard oil lines although the short serial supply and return connecting hoses (see below)

were replaced with three lengths of the same braided hose (one short section and two longer crossover lines) with M30 x 1.5mm straight and 90 degree Argus fittings attached:

The coolers themselves were the serial '72 S Behr radiator-type cooler with the larger and new for '72 M30 threaded fitting but the brackets were cut off and reversed for the left hand cooler. The serial S cover guard with gasket was employed for RH with a specially fabricated one for LH.

Finding another non-leaking Behr cooler for the LH side to go with @dougieboy1's partially repaired one has been very difficult: a handful of NOS ones are currently available (Manfred Freisinger - €5,000 (of course) and Manfred Herring at Early911.de - a pair for €7,000...

These Behr coolers, whilst light and efficient when intact, are unfortunately very fragile, which might explain why Porsche changed to the more robust (no cover guard required), but less efficient, 'snake' type front cooler for 1973 MY 911 S and Carrera RS.

However I did manage to source another good used one from Dirk Schäfer for €900 whilst at the Strähle swapmeet at the weekend and this will be modified and trial fitted to the shell this week - to go with the right hand one trial fitted yesterday:

Once the left hand one has been installed we then need to mark out where the holes in the inner wings need to be made for the crossover lines to be routed around the rear of the 110l fuel tank. Plastic sleeving will need to be fitted to each hole to protect the braided hose from chafing on sharp steel edges:

4. Heinzmann fire extinguisher (p/n: 911.722.011.00):

Having tried and failed to find an original Heinzmann bottle at all (I missed out on the pair stretch had for sale on ESR a few years back), or alternatively one of Mike Moore's very good (and functioning) Lifeline repro systems (they won't make any more no matter the quantity - I asked), I was lucky to have been able to borrow yellow491's original bottle and had it scanned and 3D printed by Central Scanning in Bromsgrove (thanks Ant!). It still needs to be painted red, the valve sprayed a dull brass colour and attached to the bottle and then all the cables, alu 'dog-house' cover, plumbing etc etc installed but for now we've just fitted the mounting brackets above the rear seat bowl (passenger side) as in period:

Hi Matteo,

You're really going all out with the details on your car, keep it up, it's very informative and I'm learning a lot !

Did Central Scanning sent you the 3D scan file of the Heinzman bottle? I'd love to print one too...

5. Heinzmann external pull handle:

I should have said in the previous post that not all S-Rs had a Heinzmann extinguisher fitted (it wasn't a factory fit item according to the Aktennotiz of 16.09.71 or "Information Regarding Porsche Vehicles Used for Sports Purposes 2 Ed." or indeed listed in "Spare Parts List 911 S Model 72 Competition Type, Nov.71"

However we do know GeLo #44 had one as this was noted on the "Carnet de Pesage" or scrutineering forms for 1972 Le Mans 24 hours and period photos:

The pull handle is magnesium and was sourced from E B Motorsport - we need to paint the S red however.

Thanks! No they didn't actually Gabriel but I can ask and see if they can.
