There's not been much progress, but I have spent many a happy hour sorting out the wiring loom.

The car's original loom was included when I bought it. Looked like this:


Hmmmmm....

There were various hacks and bodges, with the fuse panel area being particularly hideous. The original fuse banks had been replaced with blade fuses. Slightly less neatly than Jonny's solution to the same problem:


This might not be everyone's idea of fun, but I've found it immensely satisfying to faff about very slowly at my workbench sorting it all out.


The front loom is now done, including a bench test with switches, headlights, indicators, wiper motor, heater fan etc attached.

Admit I'm a weirdo. But it's a nice warm winter job.
Not sure I'd fancy justifying the hours to a paying customer, though. Took ages! I guess I am unusually thick, and might get quicker with practice.

Sent mine "69" to Kroon and he said good job I did as the harness was hard and cracking internally and typical of that age of harness.

I spent time cleaning, repairing, re sleeving and wrapping a number of smaller sections ( lights, ignition etc) of the loom. I enjoyed doing it and found it quite satisfying. Perhaps we should start a wiring loom weirdo club?

Luckily DDK is a broad church. I am told that every deviancy and fetish known to man is represented among DDK-ers, although one or two members are doing most of the heavy lifting there.
Anyway I'm sure our wiring weirdo club will be nurtured here, among friends.

As you know, wiring with 2-colour insulation is readily available with the marker colour as a trace, spiralling around the main colour. But the dot / blob style of marker sometimes favoured by Porsche is not so easy to find. What size brush do you use, when hand painting the blobs one-by-one?

Yes, I did wonder about that. I understand why people would be justifiably suspicious of 50 year old wiring, and a new loom would help with peace of mind if nothing else.

But having had it apart and inspected everything (including unwrapping to look at each individual wire), I found that (unsurprisingly) most of the rubbery / heat shrinky material used to insulate individual connectors was badly perished. I replaced all of that.
But in general the insulation was in really very good condition, not brittle.
As usual, I was pretty impressed how well Porsche's efforts had lasted, and rather less impressed with the later "improvements".

We shall see. When it catches fire destroying my car, and my insurers refuse to pay out because the wiring was done by a moron, I'll report back!

(More seriously, I am an engineer and did inspect very carefully. I'm not worried)

The dot trace is certainly a challenge especially if you are colour blind as, statistically at least, 25% of DDK male members (no alluding here please) are likely to be. I tried painting the dots with a number 2 sable brush. This I gave up and I now know why the Pointilist movement never got beyond Signac and Saurat. Remembering my childhood
(with difficulty) I recalled "potato printing" and using a carefully fashioned potato chip dipped in paint I can now make ten dots per second on a good day. Kirk
