Who was I trying to kid.

It was just hiding under a load of (original looking) lead having rusted from the other side.

Now patched up and off to watch England lose the rugby.

The patches are getting to look really good Gary, toooo much practice!
Similarly the grinding, really neat.

Slow progress, not had the time to commit recently. Anyone would think we had a new car to launch or something... (wait till Monday )

I may finally be ready to weld this panel in place. So much prep, more prep, try again, dry build and sub assembly of hinge mounts, sound deadening tabs etc. Screen drain tubes are in, but I can’t weld them until the last minute or I wouldn’t be able to get the shelf back in.

Going to hire a spot welder next weekend and go for it!

I remember the run-up to several car launches in the USA and UK in my automotive years, I went grey around the same time.

Car looks set.
I hired a spot welder at my Big Rebuild, I was the only person to hire it I was told so had the fortune of it being new and came in a big case with a wide range of electrode arms.
It had a timer too, so once you had done the test welds and tried to open the spots to see how it tore apart you were away.

I did a lot of the panel welding this way, the rear wings, all along the sills inner and outer etc. Very fast and no grinding plus it looks factory.
After I had finished the hire charges cost way more than buying the thing, so with Black Friday 'period' here and Xmas pressie request time looming, just maybe you should get your own?
About £450 untimed for one, sell it after??

Drain tubes look good. Tricky to weld and keep sealed once ground flush. I silver soldered mine in, just a thought.

Thanks guys, I’m desperately trying not to compromise too much, but it’s so hard!

NOTHING better than DIY on these things.
You will feel so good when it is all free of rust and you did it.
Bet your son will be able to weld after it is all over too!

Sense of satisfaction is important as you say, and also if I do make compromises then it’s my call and I’ll live with it. If I pay someone to do it then I can’t accept it and I can’t afford that level of work (Barry!)

We haven’t moved onto welding yet, trouble is all the welds are important so there is no room for practice, I struggle enough myself.

It did. The inside still has some issues!

Final assembly is underway. All epoxy/weld through primed as required, inside the screen rail as well.

Hired the spot welder, does the job!

Now onto the mig welding where it will all go wrong
