I trust yours is going well. I think your cost / benefit analysis, hence choosing to do the inside and underside yourself, makes perfect sense. But Steve's about to earn his money with the outside - sculpting the shape, light lines, colour sanding etc.
To answer your questions - Steve tells me that any of the water-based stonechip products will give the required finish (of course you have to apply it with that goal in mind, pretty thickly in some places and more lightly elsewhere).
We started by looking at Darren's recommendation, Teroson Terotex, but Steve wasn't able to easily get the grey water based version.
We didn't spend too much time on that, because I preferred plan B anyway - instead of rely on whatever grey the stonechip comes in, Steve suggested we overpaint the relevant areas in whatever grey I felt was the best match with my reference spec.
So we stonechipped it all black, painted the underside and arches grey, and a later step (after outer colour) will be to reproduce what the factory did with the overpainting in black.
On 1970 cars, thinking about the process and looking at the end results on original cars, I believe the process was:
Step 1) Underside, under wings, engine bay etc stonechipped. Originally in grey stonechip, in my case painted grey.
Step 2) Outer colour coats. Overspray gets on the grey bits, which looks a mess
Step 3) Quick fix is to bung on some black to hide the scene of the crime. I reckon the brief was to do just enough to make the car look nice when viewed from sensible angles, not to give it a full coat. So the guy applying the black to the wheelarches will have stuck the gun quite far up into the arches but not tried too hard for perfection. As long as it looked OK with the wheels on, job done.
Similarly for the floor edges. The black looked like this:
It does not extend across the entire floor - it's been sprayed in from the side, just enough to make the car look good in side view.
Mine will be like that.
My engine bay has been done in the same black stonechip, but will later be painted in black, more matt than the current finish (I think it's too glossy, am going more matt, just about to approve some spray-out samples for this and the dash).
You probably know more than me about this, but hope it helps a bit. Let me know what I've got wrong!
