Well the cams are finally finished so I can update the thread and show where we are now!

The delay had been in finding the right experts to do the work on the steel cams, on the right below. This involved the drilling for the
oil feed, but the difficultly was spark eroding the thread in the end for the oil fed cam bolt, as the cams are so hard. You can see the
difference in the ends of an early oil fed cast cam on the left, and later steel type. Neil was adamant he wanted the later style as you
can see in the picture it's much thicker and robust where the bolt goes in, Neil has seen breakages at high revs in the early type in
this area. You can see the drilled oilways as the cam goes in.

We are using solid rockers and they are adjusted by the shim or lash cap method. These are little caps which sit on the tip of the
valve stem and you need quite a selection to get it right.

Here the shim sits on top of the valve stem, complete with titanium spring caps

The solid rockers have been specially made for us using F1 technology and then sent to specialists in France to be DLC coated.
This is an extremely hard, diamond like coating, which gives it the black appearance and means we can swop between cast or steel
cams. The rockers shafts are nitrided for hardness as well, all in the search for strength and reliability at high revs, fingers crossed!

Let's face it Mike, you're beyond Bert's help now.

Looks great, by the way.

p.s. tell Neil I can let him have a proper feeler gauge ( NOS, of course) for a small fee (sits back and waits for explanation why I am wrong  )
The simple things you see are all complicated

With the valve gear done the rocker covers can go on and the plug leads finished off. The top covers will come off again for the cam
timing but the lower covers are on for the running in. They have no sealant on them to make it easier but everything was skimmed
so should be ok. After the running in on the engine dyno the rockers will come out again and the shims replaced.

The plug leads are all in place now and correctly positioned, the top of the dizzy looks like a nest of snakes so they are individually
tabbed up so you know which goes where, hopefully......

Mike, that engine is glorious. Absolutely superb. 8)

It's madness though.
Your tortured genius has produced an automotive sculpture.
You can't subject those internals to combustion or even - God forbid - exhaust gases.
It's too beautiful to use.

Love the details which I shall steal such as the O rings for ties of the leads.
Just fab. :drunken:

It has been said before Mike, but this is simply Art - there must be a category of prize out there for such a thing of beauty (and patience in creation).

I can but marvel at the expertise and research that must have gone in to this.

I seriously do hope you have a publisher for this story.

So we await the first firing on video please :-)

thanks for the comments guys, it does help me keep going when I wonder what the hell I'm doing here!

Mark, knowing Neil that feeler gauge probably came out of a 'werks' toolbox from a Le Mans 935

That plug is unsupported compared to the rest and the finger 'hooks' over the cap as well as like the 5 others restraining the plug top from popping off the actual plug head?

Mike,

Your build is simply impressive.

Have you (or Neil) ever considered the use of valves with 8mm stems eliminating the need of the elaborate lash caps & solid rockers? We have had quite good experiences with a 3.0L MFI turning 8,300 RPM with adjustable rockers, 50mm intake/ 40mm exhaust valves with 8mm stems and slightly harder Schrick valve springs with Ti retainers. We had no signs of valve train float at all with this combination.

Of course not an original solution but benefitting from ‘modern’ valve and valve guide metallurgy/ technology.

Best,
Christian
