Ta Mark
OK some more progress today
Cutting out ready for the drivers footwell bit
More cutting
Weirdly, this is what greeted me on the inside, under the carpet
Yes that's a bunch of opal fruits (starburst for you youngies). I had a minor mouse problem about 18 months ago - and it looks like this is where he was building the larder. I coaxed him out at the time with some chocolate and a steel spring but didn't appreciate he'd made himself so welcome.
First bit in
In terms of making the piece up this lot was a doddle. However I had to take a lot more care not to burn stuff when I was welding. I managed to burn out the motor on the dremel so bought a new one.
Both bits welded in and a bit of finishing
While I was waiting for some weld-through primer to dry I thought I'd do a bit of cutting at the front
That's ready for tomorrow now - unfortunately I've got to pop into work in the morning so won't get onto it until the afternoon.
By the way - this is what my car used to look like
Cheers
Mark

Coming on well! You'll have just about sorted the methods and nailed the settings on the welder as you finish it, so next time you can learn it all over again. As least that's what I do with these things!
How does the other side of the car look?

Good work chief.
What welder are you using again?

Other side will be just as bad - I've unearthed some pictures from the backdate work - it seems the garage did nothing about the corrosion that was present at that time which is why I'm here now.......
However I'm not tackling that until after the POB tour - may leave it until September and take the car off the road for a few weeks and do it in the evenings and weekends
It feels really good having done it
For paint I was planning on using the dinitrol primer and rust converter, and then covering that with the dinitrol sticky black stuff. (Can't remember it's name) - is that about right do you think? (I know you're a dinitrol guy Gary)

That is what I've used, to be honest who knows if its better or worse than any other product!
You need to get to the other side of the welding as well ideally.

I'm now using a portamig 185. Got to say its brilliant. It just works each time and is wonderfully consistent. I wasn't cheap but is well worth it. You're welcome to borrow it Nige if you need to.
I'm now welding doing pulses, with about a second in between each one, which is working really well for me - it force me to slow down a bit and correct problems as I'm going along (previously when I tried to lay a bead if it worked it was great but if something was wrong I often wouldn't stop soon enough)

I've put weld through primer on the back of all the patches I've welded in, and I was planning on spraying inside with the dinitrol cavity wax

Rust converter first then epoxy mastic then put your dinitrol wax over that.

That's what I've done on my patch repairs. Fingers crossed it works!

Definitely coat it with epoxy mastic, great stuff.

That really is a great result. Just goes to show what you can achieve from a daunting starting point. One step at a time.
Well done Mark.

Thanks for the kind comments guys.
Had to show my face in work today so couldn't start until this afternoon. Tackled the bottom bit - negligible metalwork but fiddly to set up and get at
Drilled a hole in the bottom for drainage as well.
Then moved to the front.
I'd cleaned it up initially the other day
But the more I looked at it and talked it over with Ian, the more I realised which bits I didn't need any more. The rearmost bit is superfluous and was also quite badly corroded.
I chopped it off
Ready to hopefully finish the last of the welding tomorrow.
I've also ordered the mastic 121 stuff and paid for 24 hour delivery

Great work Mark.
Impressed with your 'get stuck in' attitude, especially tackling it so soon before going away in the car!
Hope it all continues well tomorrow.
