I too have heard of this matting type material stuffed up in that area probably similar to the coconut material under the grill between the seats in the centre of the tunnel...!
Nothing in mine when they pulled the wings off, mind you there was little in the way of underseal on mine either, probably why it rotted out in 9 years. Inners were all shot at the rear but strangely the rear seat area was good and so often you see these completely shot.

Numbers are low enough that it's possible to remember most folks who have one. Which reminds me - have you seen Clyde's 69S (in Australia)?

Also Polo red, if I remember rightly, and completely unmolested survivor. Good source for details.

Regarding the Stone chip my paint shop used "Raptor" which is a truck bed protector but has the advantage of being sprayed with different textures from really rough to completely smooth.
I think your car should be coloured under the bonnet and the cars underside and Raptor can be coloured/tinted as it is available clear.

I took this pic from member TP81's restoration thread as it shows the gap up under the rear wing to the C pillar and rear window curve.
Have you asked your body shop what goes up in that area yet or how they intend filling it..?

There was pretty much nothing up there for my Aug 70 built car. Same for John M's too. Pretty much bare metal....!

Anything you can get up there in terms of epoxy or waxoyl will help....

And you must start your own thread, looks like you've got an interesting build going on there....

Interesting. I was thinking of using Raptor after getting a swatch of it from the NEC last year. Its Tintable which is what sold it to me. Does your bodyshop use this Regularly and if so how how they found its longevity?

The painter is so happy with the flexibility of it for so many purposes he uses it for all restorations now..
Longevity, well hard to say as my car was the first they tried it on.

A small update having visited my shell, with Barry, today.

Previously I said:

Before the new rear wings went on (when the area was fully accessible) this was primed with decent Wurth primer. I guess some of that will have been damaged / burned off by the later welding.
Subsequently a good blast with the epoxy primer. TBH I don't know whether there's any seam seal up there - quite hard to reach - will ask Steve.
It will later get stone chip, then dinitrol / waxyol-type stuff (including running it down from inside the C pillar).

This all remains true.

Things to add:
1) There is a lot of epoxy in that area. Steve has not been shy with the gun
2) He has managed to get plenty of seam sealer up there too
3) Barry reckons the most commonly-seen gap filling material at the C-pillar is flexible calk / "dum dum". Mine will have a bit of that, just to fill up the gap and stop water flicked up from the wheel getting too far up into the C pillar.
(As previously mentioned, will have stone chip and cavity wax too).

I'm happy with that.

That is what I used in 1989 on my rebuild.
Coated in smooth Hammerite and Waxoil.
All is well and solid 27 years on.

Bit more progress.
I'm very happy with the stonechip textures and imitation-hastily-applied seam seal splodges, which match the spec I gave DC really well.
As well as the very visible seam seal application (to match the factory finish), Steve has less visibly sealed every other seam he could find.

It's going to be quite orange.





Paint is a very slightly custom mix. We found that the manufacturer's spec for the colour code was a very good match to my luckily-preserved original paint area. But we darkened it slightly to get it perfect.

Pics are a bit deceptive - the colour is more orange, less yellow in real life and in daylight. Also it's not quite as glossy as it looks under the lights.

Looks great, What was the Underseal you used/colour and what sort of gun was it applied with? Looks very close texture wise.
Has the engine bay been done in Black Schultz?
