914 vs the rest of Porsche

Testing and setup fettling are virtually done now. Just for those that are interested the setup I've gone for is:

Front a pinch of toe in, 1.5degree camber(with as much caster as I could get) and anti-roll bar set to mid position.

Rear with another pinch of toe in, 1 degree camber.

Height - front is 1 inch lower that the rear, just to try to move a little weight forward as there's nothing in the front now the spare wheel is taken out.

There's still a little more oversteer than I'm happy with so I'll tighten the AR bar later this afternoon.



Hankook supersofts work great and thanks to Barrie Martin for making sure the front valance and side rocker panels arrived in good time.

Wayne/Jonathan - I've not got one of those timing blades on the front bumper, I assume I don't really need one, as the front bumper will clearly cut the beam. Also, I've not got any towing eyes front or back (they used to be part of the skid plates in rally setup) I assume this won't be a scrutineering fail - according to Blue book they are a recommendation (10.1.15 page 339). Apart from that I think I'm good to go. Just pray for dry now, as I've not got any wet tyres.

Hi Moggy,

The timing strut is mandatory, you won't pass scrutineering without one - see Blue book 10.9. All hillclimbs and sprints these days are timed by light beams.
Just another little job before the week-end!

If you're stuck, I can bring my one that screws on with the number plate self-tapper.

I can also bring one that screws into the original tow eye mount within the front bumper if it helps - just let me know and I will dig out of the 914

Thanks guys but it looks like my own stupidity has ruled me out of the Harewood event.



Got stuck behind an old couple pulling a caravan at 20mph for a few miles on a single track lane, saw an opportunity to pass but the wet grass spun me around and I ended up hitting a concrete drainage culvert. All pretty low speed (about 20-30mph), and would have got away with it as a simple little 360 on grass if I didn't manage to hit the only thing solid for 1/2 a mile What made me smile was when the car towing the caravan slowly pulls up next to me and the little old lady asks if I'm already then proceeds to say "I told him to pull over for you, but he is being an arsehole today" I don't know why but it made me laugh at the time, I just didn't expect it to come out of the mouth of a sweet old lady .

I'll have to contact Harewood and see if I can get my event fee back to put towards repair costs.

So far on the list of things I need are:

Front disk
Front right strut (suitable for Bilstein insert)
Turbo tie rod
Possibly front right A-arm (I've got to check tonight how much the ball joint has moved - if it's only 2mm I'll keep it and compensate for it at the top of the strut)
Rear right trailing arm.
Rear gearbox section (as it snapped one of the rear gearbox mount casting)
Rear right light lens
One (possibly two) cookie cutters (preferably black)

A real PITA that this happened as it did and when it did as the car was handling like it was on rails (just not on grass )

Oh bugger mate.

I have a full front suspension (inc discs) and both rear trailing arms in my back garden. They'll need cleaning up and maybe un-siezing in places but if they are any use to you, you can have them.

So, so sorry to see this has happened to you're lovely car. I have been lurking on this thread seeing what you turn the car into next. The repairs look extensive, I wish you all the best with it and glad to see you are O.K.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I've had a good look over it tonight and it does look like it's just bolt on bits plus a little light bodywork repairs, so it's game on to get it all fixed in the next few weeks.

Looks like I've got the rear arm sorted thanks to Stuart. Hopefully I'll pickup a rear gearbox section from RetroSteve tomorrow afternoon.

Front disc and turbo tie rod end ordered today from Design911. Plus another new Hankook tyre from MrTyreMotorsport (Dan, who I know there, did have a giggle when I asked for another new one only days after buying 4 new ones)

Which leaves 2 black 7j Cookie Cutters, Rear lense (any ideas??) and the front strut/shock (which I'm presently trying to figure out whether or not it's a 911 strut - I think it is).

Oh mate what a nightmare

sorry, don't have any of the bits you need. It just shows how slippery the grass was if a rallyist can't save it (or do so avoiding the semi hidden objects!). Good luck getting it fixed and let me know when next out (am not at Goodwood, but doing every event thereafter)

Really sorry to hear about your bump. The main thing is you're ok and no one else is hurt.
I'm sorry I dont have any parts on your list but if you lived a little closer I would certainly help you knock it back into shape.
