LED headlights - now cost effective option.

Sure, I thought about this myself but its not a like for like comparison as you are back into the world of non- approved bulb with light emitted from side- positioned diodes, reflected by the existing reflector. Vs a complete sealed lamp and reflector unit.

There are some more scientific views earlier in the thread which are well worth review.

...They are the 'same' unit fitted to Jeep Wranglers and look like a good option. I need to pick Charlies brains abit more regarding setup, alignment etc but they look like a good option. Especially now I realise that the black bowl detail on the Modrod isn't the best at reflecting light around the bowl

Interesting - looks a good price. Looks similar to what I bought - same idea (RPMteknik lumetek things). no idea of comparative performance etc. Mine are fantastic at night.

That price from Amazon is pretty tempting...what is so tricky about how to fit them...?..or is that what you are now trying to ascertain....if it's straightforward then I would be tempted...I would also be putting them in the E Type....those headlamps are even worst than a 911....!

there are easy enough to do , you need to build a hybrid headlight unit from a US spec vw beetle bucket and a 911 outer rim. the 'sealed beam' LED replacements fit straight in. Its all bolt together stuff and not complicated

I think it is straight forward enough to do. The 912 has H4 upgrade and are ok, but the few times I have driven the ModRod in the dark the lights are woeful...granted I may have high beam and dipped wires back to front but I like the idea of the Truck lite units for this car. As James says you need to mash up some Beetle units. Having said that...Is it possible to fit the smooth early style glass to the later bowl etc ?

Would the Lynx Eye units fit? Maybe too deep?

They are E stamped and about £150 each

So it wouldn't make sense to just dismantle my current H4 units in the car and use them..?..or does this involve cutting things up...should I try to get a cheap old second hand set of lights and butcher their cases...then re-use my current glass lenses and chrome rings...?

From memory there was an adapted plate that I got from RPM. Think it worked out at about £30 a side. You could make it yourself but for that price I didn't think it was worth it. I doubt RPM would sell you just the adapter.

Regardless, you have to use the early style smooth lenses. Otherwise the light bounces all over the place. I bought some nice repros on German Ebay, when I had to replace the cracked lens on my 912 :

Hey Chris..how's your Friday avo....just finishing a few beers here at home with my brother that you met....simple for me to buy some of those lenses as I can get them delivered to my in laws in Hamburg...so that's sorted...

Mark..don't suppose RPM supplied an drawings of those mounting plates..we should be getting some new CNC machines at work which can cut metal soon..not just the card and acrylic for models...so I could easily either CAD them up....and make my own...or even make them for other DDK folk to be honest....?
