72 Hotrod - my new project

Re: 72 Hotrod - my new project
That's got the engine in it that I posted the other day to see if the 72S still existed. I am also coming to the conclusion the S may no longer exist and been written off as the Targa seems to have had all the important bits from an S put onto it. As you say this was done in the 80s when the S would have been just another old, not very valuable 911.
The Targa was due to go into the auction at NEC Classic. I have been helping the auctioneers understand what was on the car and the value to place it at. I assume you must have paid a reasonable price for it as it is not like they (and the owner) didn't know what was on the car.
Could you PM me the current registration number on the Targa as it originally had a private plate.
BTW the engine belongs to 9112300127 should you ever come across it.
Ian.

That's funny Ian, I guessed it might have been the engine you mentioned the other day!

I saw your thread myself shortly after you posted it and did some detective work... seemed to make sense to put the engine back in a 72 car if the original S no longer exists... as you say, engine, brakes and seats seem likely to have come from an S.
re the price...I think it was good value but who knows, v much subject to condition (i havent seen it yet). The auctioneers spoke to 1 brand name Porsche specialist who told them the engine alone was worth more than I paid, so I can only assume the vendor wanted a quick deal. (well, that plus the fact the auction is oversubscribed.. bird the hand etc.)

Re: 72 Hotrod - my new project
Dan thought you might be doing that. The one I bought was well rotten and not a viable resto, so good luck with your plans and I am sure the shell will find a good T engine etc. to keep it on the road.

shell denuded of all rot, paint and detritus
new panels for repair have arrived and laid out as presumably Dom thinks I wont know which is which otherwise
some fiddly rust repair to be finished before it goes onto the Celette for the welding in of the new panels (floors and sills obviously the biggest sections)
RHS battery box removed in readiness for airflow to oil cooler

so, the bare metalling has commenced. Quite honestly its a bit scary when you go and see something in this state that looked quite shiny when you bought it! But its the only way to have a 100% solid car...

Re: 72 Hotrod - my new project
Dan - seen it advertised but will get it this weekend with the lovely Alfaholics cars in it. Hopefully off to see mine this weekend over at Rob's as the new Safety devices cage is now in.
That shell will be a great start point - Dom said to me 'the shell is everything, as all else just bolts to it'.

Totally know what you mean. It's well scary! And the only way to be 100% sure of rot free.
Looks interesting. What's the deal with the targa? It really is a v rare car as has already been said. Would be a shame to see it as a parts donor....not that there's any sentimentalist targa-ism going on here...

The targa has gone safely off to a targa-holic! It was a good way to get hold of a year correct engine and box for me... A very good waymurph2309 wrote:squirdan wrote:so, the bare metalling has commenced. That's good news. And having been to Le Mans in James' car, I can say the 2.4 hi comp is a bit special too....squirdan wrote:
