Oh the joys of removing factory rubbery paint stuff from inside the car! Definitely need two angle grinders on the go, one with a wire brush, the other with a flap wheel.


Rear seat base in all its glory – not bad in reality. Right side is only locally rusted, left side is sound. Parcel shelf does have a small amount of rust, but wil be rplaced anyway:



Where floor had been replaced, welding left a litle to be desired! Will be ground down and redone properly:


Seam between front edge of floor and panel behind the pedals, etc, rusted – new panel needed, which is on its way:


This is some of the 2–3 kilos of stuff I scraped off the inside! Car should be faster now it's so light...

I wish! Well, I guess it would be possible if I wasn't worried about having to do further work later. I want to get it right now, if I can. Doors are perfect – no rot, no repairs! Phew!

The one thing that I do want to check is the inside of the sills. The inner panels are absolutely fine, the outers absolutely fine, but what lies in between I don't know. We plan to cut the top out of each sill (where the rubber sill strip is glued) and take a look inside. If it's OK, then we'll give it a thorough rust-proofing and weld a new closing panel on top. If it looks dodgy, then off come the sills... Better safe than sorry at this stage. I did cut a small exploratory hole in the top of the right-hand sill and it looks very good inside, but I won't rest easy until we've carried out a proper investigation... On the whole, though, I'm very pleased. El Chucho will live!

Keith, could you not beg/borrow/hire/steal one of these automotive endoscopes and drill a small hole for a look see instead of whacking a panel off?

Good idea – I'll ask about. However, the right-hand side has got some rust repair needed, so I'll be chopping that one off anyway to take a look-see. I seem to be spending my entire time these days on-line looking at the way Porsche built the sills/rockers etc on their cars over the years. Very educational (and more than a bit boring for Sarah.. )

Curate's egg is how I'm seeing this car. Took out the windscreen today to look at the corners of the dashboard. The windscreen had clearly been leaking, judging from the amount of black 'goo' applied to the lower corners. The dashtop was all saggy and coming unstuck, so removed that expecting to find rusted dashboard. No – it's solid, but the metal 'shell' of the dashboard is as rotten as a pear on the RH (passenger) side, which accounts for the vinyl all coming unstuck and the padding disintegrating. Not quite sure what to do about the dashtop now – maybe it can be repaired by letting in new metail, or maybe i should start a trend and run the car with no dash covering at all!

Been very busy with magazine work, collecting parts and, above all else, waiting for a 'slot' in the bodyshop to get the rust repairs done...

Plus...just been offered another car.
