They look like poor quality ‘monkey metal’ castings, if so they would be extremely difficult to weld. Also I’d avoid cross bracing between the manifolds as the engine needs grow with temperature, that’s why the linkage floats.
Which cylinder is the fracture on?
BTW John Mayer now resides in the Outer Hebrides, not that it makes any difference

Thanks again folks.
Cannot contact Jake at all.
John Maher kindly replied but doesn't stock type-4 parts anymore. He gave me a few other idea one of which is Rolf Klaus. He builds better quality but won't have any until next year.
CSP, thanks Nige, have also replied and pointed me at: http://www.csp-shop.de/shop2/?func=dl&artnr=21127 Not sure what exactly from this bunch i should be looking at though - Nige help?
Also, Bernard got back to me and said I'm the only one who's had problems but he would show them to Scat next time he's visiting them.

just thought i'd link up this thread to what happened next - basically, with all the help on this great forum I sourced some really top quality manifolds that have not let me down since..... http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=17579
.....I highly recommend.
Oh, and despite some other wee problems along the way 912e #1916(appropriate number given out small country's history) has been used (and loved) pretty much daily.
